RECREATIONAL THERAPIST

Southeast Bronx Neighborhood Centers Inc. (SEBNC) is a nonprofit 501(c) 3 multi-service agency that has served the Morrisania section of Bronx, New York since 1929. We serve multi-ethnic populations that are rich in diversity and cultural heritages. We offer programs and services for all ages, including infants, school-aged children, young adults and the developmentally disabled.

Position Description and Essential Responsibilities

We are seeking a Recreational Therapist to work in our Leisurely Yours After-School Program. Under the guidance of the Coordinator of DD Services, the Recreational Therapist is responsible for assessments, development of treatment goals and implementation of recreational treatment for developmentally disabled individuals. The essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting group sessions and identifying activity modifications, adaptations and assistive devices that may be necessary to implement the treatment plan.
  • Developing, planning and conducting recreational activities geared to various levels of functioning; as well as setting up and storing art supplies.
  • Observing individuals’ responses to treatment interventions/activities and reports behavioral observations to the Coor. Of DD Services so the treatment plan can be continued, modified or discontinued as necessary.
  • Planning and supervising monthly community trips and logging daily program activities.
  • Documenting monthly and event-based case notes.
  • Monitoring the individuals’ behaviors and provide input for semi-annual evaluations.
  • Preparing written semi-annual reports about the nature and extent of the individuals’ participation in program recreational activities.
  • Complying with all agency, professional and regulatory standards of conduct and/or professional ethics and reports any suspected incidents and occurrences of ethical misconduct as classified by the NYS Justice Center and Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD); as well as reporting any safety issues and injuries immediately to the Coor. Of DD Services and other appropriate authorities.
  • Performing related duties as needed.

Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in behavioral sciences, human services, social services fields with 1-2 years of experience working with developmentally disabled individuals and planning activities in a group setting.

OR

High School Diploma with 2-3 years of experience working with developmentally disabled individuals and planning activities in a group setting.

Must have ability to reason and solve problems, have a keen sense of observation and ability to maintain composure under pressure. Must be dependable and punctual; as well as, have excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and writing skills; and a strong sense of teamwork.

CPR and First Aid certificates required. NYS Driver License a plus. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Ability to see at normal distance, hear normal conversations and sounds. Physical ability to bend, squat, sit on floor, climb stairs, skip, and run. Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular paper and use computer keyboard and other office machines/equipment. Ability to lift 40 lbs. to 100 lbs. safely and occasionally, when needed.

Other Requirements

Must submit to job-pertinent examinations including tuberculosis test and criminal record background checks. Employment is conditional pending satisfactory results of required tests, etc.

Salary Range & Benefits: $15.61 per hour. SEBNC offers a benefits package that includes: paid holidays, PTO (vacation, personal, sick); health, dental & vision and 401(k).
