Advanced Practice Nurse

Provides primary and specialty health care services within defined scope of practice in collaboration with a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/Froedtert Health policies and procedures.

Department Position Purpose

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as part of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the inpatient services as a member of the Department of Medicine – Division of General Internal Medicine.

The APP will have a strong foundation in evidence based practice and ensure an environment of safe quality care.

Generally, Monday-Sunday 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on an alternating schedule: 7 on 7 off (one week, one week off)

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Medicine intervention in inpatient environment as a member of the Hospitalist Service.
  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Hospitalist Medicine services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  • Provides initial and ongoing assessment and management of urgent care issues at night related to internal medicine or critical care needs.
  • Mainly admissions with some cross coverage

Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing

Physician Assistant

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Prior Experience:

Zero years of experienced required

Preferred Experience:

APP experience and/or experience in inpatient, internal medicine or hospital medicine

Certifications / Licenses
