PARAPROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher and school principal, and under the general supervision of the school nurse, to instruct student individually and in groups with prescribed learning objectives, and/or conduct medical procedures, and/or to perform related tasks as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Works with student individually or in small groups to tutor, reinforce, or follow-up learning activities.

2. As needed assists in physical development and fitness, communication, personal hygiene (i.e. feeding, grooming, toileting), academic learning and vocational skills.

3. If needed implements a health maintenance plan to meet student’s need.

4. Provides appropriate supervision of students in the classroom, at assemblies, on fieldtrips, and in the lunch & play areas as necessary.

5. Provides protection and safety to all students assigned.

6. Operates assistive devices such as orthopedic braces, supports, and teaching devices as needed.

7. Participates in in-service activities.

8. Enforces school and classroom rules & procedures.

9. Records and document activities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or comparable demonstration of basic competence. Training or experience working with special needs children is also desirable. Must possess an Instructional Aide Certificate of Proficiency.

ABILITY TO:

1. Establish & maintain cooperative relationships w/ students, parents, and school personnel.

2. Recognize hazards to safety.

3. Perform specialized medical procedures as assigned.

4. Communicate w/ children to motivate them to participate in learning activities.

5. Learn to assist student in special subject matter or assist children who have special learning needs.

6. Maintain emotional control under difficult situations.

7. Maintain confidentiality.

8. Follow oral & written direction and execute them efficiently.

9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups.

10. Communicate effectively via telephone, computer modem and in person.

SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITON:

Some degree of physical ability and exertion is required of this position. Over time, the physical demands of any position are subject to change. Depending on the particular assignment, the Instructional One-to-One Aide/Special Education could be expected to:

1. Push and/or pull weights up to 100 pounds, lift and carry weights up to 50 pounds by one individual unless using wheeled equipment in which case these limits may be exceeded.

2. Stand, sit and/or move about for sustained periods.

3. Maintain an appropriate personal demeanor during periods of heightened stress.

4. Exercise physical control over students who are acting out and/or offer physical assistance to students who might be themselves physically impaired.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.30 – $17.12 per hour

Schedule:

  • Day shift
  • Monday to Friday

  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)
