Under general supervision, and in conformance to established standards, procedures and policy, provides professional nursing services in the care and treatment of resident on an assigned shift and unit.

  • In conformance to established standards, procedures and policy, provides professional nursing care and treatment to residents and carry out physician orders on an assigned shift and unit; assist the physician on daily rounds; provide physician with charts and records of changes in conditions; perform nutritional audits, maintain immunization and infection control program for assigned area. Provides professional nursing care and treatment to residents using assessment skills and clinical knowledge; documents care provided. Communicates with nursing staff on other shifts to assure continuity of care. Communicates pertinent information regarding resident condition and needs to medical provider and nursing supervisor. Maintains contact with resident families as necessary and required.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of medical charts and clinical records for residents. Uses computer to order lab tests prescribed by medical provider and maintain records/forms according to facility policy.
  • Orders and dispenses prescribed medications, treatments, diets and medical supplies; completes appropriate forms.
  • Provides non-supervisory patient care related guidance, instructions and explanations to non-professional nursing personnel in resident care and treatment and the use of equipment.
  • Plans and participates in care plan meetings; coordinates resident care activities, participates in training classes for patient care personnel.

6. Recommends and/or orders supplies and maintains equipment; advises nursing supervisor of equipment and supplies needed.
7. Participates on various committees to improve standards of nursing care.

8. Follows and supports the philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of nursing service and the facility
9. Responds to calls in a crisis situation.

  • Requires working knowledge of pharmacology of commonly prescribed medicines and drugs and their therapeutic and possible adverse reactions.
  • Requires ability to provide professional nursing care based on orders of the physician and the specific needs of the patient.
  • Requires ability to evaluate patient condition and behavior and prepare accurate detailed records of such observations.
  • Requires ability to apply emergency medical techniques such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, control of bleeding, airway maintenance.
  • Requires ability to instruct non-nursing personnel in the proper practices and procedures of patient care.
  • Requires ability to maintain security of the work area and comply with all facility rules, regulations, policies and directives.
  • Requires ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.
