CLINICAL NURSE I – NEURO ICU – Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian – Newport Beach, CA

As part of the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NEURO ICU) at Hoag Memorial Hospital, Newport Beach, you’ll give direct inpatient nursing care as per the California Nurse Practice Act, and in support of the mission of the Patient Care Services Division. Being a Hoag Clinical Nurse I means serving our community by using research and evidence-based outcomes, and collaborating with members of your team to offer the highest level of care to those who depend on us.

Inside Hoag’s NEURO ICU

Our Neurosurgical ICU features 12 beds and has a nurse to patient ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the delivery of safe, timely, quality care to patients ranging from adult to geriatric, suffering from severe brain injuries, stroke, brain tumors, or post-operative neurosurgical procedures.

You may be required to use a range of interventions such as: endotracheal intubation, ventilatory support, invasive pressure monitoring, tracheostomies, thrombolytic therapy, cardioversions, hemofiltration, peritoneal dialysis, atrial and ventricular overdrive pacing, intra-aortic balloon pumping, insertion of pulmonary artery and transvenous pacing catheters, chest tubes, pericardial catheters, arterial lines, bronchoscopy and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).

Other duties may include:

  • Assessing and documenting a complete physical assessment, nursing interventions, and teaching and discharge needs for patients assigned to each shift, utilizing documentation guidelines, Standards of Care and Pathway goals.
  • Communicating changes in the patient’s condition to the Charge Nurse/Supervisor and the physician directing care, as well as pertinent information at shift report using the patient Plan of Care (POC).
  • Administering medications and intravenous therapy with the ability to assess the appropriate indication dosing and effects of the medication administered for the patient.
  • Adhering to Infection Control policies and procedures, following Standard Precautions and specific isolation precautions for the prevention and spread of bloodborne pathogens and other communicable diseases.
  • Demonstrating skill in the use of equipment and devices pertinent to treatment, procedures and practices.
  • Appropriately assesses, intervenes and cares for the adult/geriatric patient, family and significant other requiring emotional support, coping support and care for significant life changes and end of life issues. Coordinates support services with Social Services, Pastoral Care, Case Management, etc.

Required

  • Active California RN License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Current National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification
  • Minimum of one (1) year Critical Care experience in an acute care facility.
  • Successful completion of a Critical Care and ECG Course or equivalent.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). If you haven’t obtained a BSN upon hire, you will be asked to begin a BSN program within one year of the hire date and obtain your BSN within two years of starting the program.

Preferred

  • BSN.
  • Previous critical care experience, and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies Certification (CRRT).
