The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Dental Assistant III to serve as a member of the Comprehensive Dentistry team. Job Summary: Provide direct chairside assistance; perform indirect patient care procedures; utilize dental materials and instruments and maintain materials inventory levels; perform disinfection/sterilization of operatory, instruments and equipment; insure equipment and facility security, maintenance and cleanliness; maintain current CPR certification and emergency preparedness.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of dental terminology and dental procedures.
  • Knowledge of instruments, materials, and standardized dental procedures used in dental care.
  • Knowledge of infectious control policies, aseptic techniques, supplies, and equipment.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate dental radiographic equipment.
  • Ability to tolerate long periods of bending, standing, and walking.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities

Required Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Registered Dental Assistant in Texas. CPR certified.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs indirect patient care procedures to include preparing the patient and treatment room for the specific type of appointment.
  • Responds to student and patient inquiries regarding clinical policies and dental procedures not requiring the advice of a dentist.
  • Provides radiographic services and assist with oral photography.
  • Operate dental radiographs equipment to take intra oral radiographs and develop and finish film.
  • Assist in obtaining pre-treatment and post insertion photographic records to include retraction and mirror positioning.
  • Provides direct chairside assistance to graduate students during the examination and treatment of patients.
  • Four handed dentistry procedures are utilized and suction and retraction needs are anticipated and performed without interfering with the vision or access of the student.
  • Performs disinfection/sterilization of the operatory, instruments and equipment according to OSHA and local policy and procedure.
  • Utilizes recommended infection control procedures at all times.
  • Utilizes dental materials and instruments for procedures and insure the setups are appropriate for the dental procedure performed.
  • Prepare, mix and assist in the use of the various materials, following manufacturer guidelines or the instructions of the dentist.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
