Phlebotomy Tech – Jefferson Medical Center – Ranson, WV

Responsibilities include blood and

blood culture collection; non-blood specimen collection including urine,

sputum, semen samples, throat swabs; chain of custody specimen

collection. Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and

expediently. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements and assists in

Clinical Laboratory as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION,

CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1.

High

school diploma or equivalent.

2.

Phlebotomy

training with externship.

3

Basic

Life Support (BLS) Certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION,

CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1.

Completion

of certification or registry exam from a nationally-recognized certifying

agency.

EXPERIENCE:
1.

Six

(6) months to One (1) year of phlebotomy experience preferred.

CORE

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The

statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work

1.

Explain

procedures to patients, and/or legal guardians, as appropriate, specific to

age, developmental stage, comprehension level and clinical status of the

patient.

2.

Identifies the

patient, verbally comparing patient information, name and birth date on the

requisition to the patient identification band before phlebotomy or specimen

collection procedure is performed or specimen is accepted.

3.

Properly labels

all specimens in the presence of the patient.

4.

Knows or is able

to find the appropriate collection tube or specimen container, the volume of

specimen needed, and specimen requirements. Demonstrates required specimen

compliance. Appropriately interprets Physician orders.

5.

Consistently

draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as

possible for patient groups from neonates to geriatrics.

6.

Collects

neonatal blood test screening specimens from neonates and infants using

proper heel stick collection techniques in accordance with procedural

guidelines established by the State Hygienic Laboratory.

7.

Receives

specimens appropriately in the information system (individually and as a

group). Orders tests and procedures accurately. Prints labels

using the information system, logs procedures and files paperwork as

required.

8.

Performs

clerical procedures with little or no direction, including filing, report

distribution (internal and external), PKU processing, faxing, and cumulative

daily reports.

9.

Completes duties

in a time efficient manner, prioritizes STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled

orders and outpatients. Prints, documents, and reviews pending Specimen

Collection lists periodically throughout each work day.

10.

Collects drug

screens (internal and external) using Chain of Custody Process.

11.

Ensures the

facilities and equipment for patient services are maintained to promote

comfort, efficiency and safety for patients and staff. Reports problems

to management.

12.

Follows standard

precautions at all times. Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in

safe, functional and sanitary conditions. The area should be well supplied

and aesthetically pleasing to co-workers, visitors and authorized personnel

at all times.

13.

Discards all

contaminated materials (biohazardous) in accordance with procedures.

Outlined in the hospital and departmental Safety and Infection Control

policies Disposes all sharps in a rigid sharps container.

14.

Cleans and

stocks phlebotomy trays and work areas. Records inventory and orders

supplies as needed.

15.

Communicates and

interacts with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and

hospital staff and the public in general in a manner that demonstrates

professionalism and concern for the individuals’ need(s).

16.

Remains current

and responsive to changes in healthcare delivery, standards established by

professional organizations, regulatory and accrediting bodies and the needs

of the organization.

17.

Obtains work

related continuing education as required for professional certification.

18.

Participates in laboratory and

hospital-wide improvement efforts as needed.

19.

Performs other

duties as assigned which support the mission and values of the organization.

Willingly accepts assignments within scope of practice, skill set and level

of competence.

PHYSICAL

REQUIREMENTS: The
