Research Phlebotomist – UAMS Medical Center – Little Rock, AR

Overview:

The Research Phlebotomist (Phlebotomist) will provide clinical support for a federally funded study, The DISCOVAR Study, housed in the Department of Epidemiology in the Fay W Boozman College of Public Health at UAMS. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and the Program Manager, the Research Phlebotomist will have primary responsibility for data and biological specimen collection (including blood draws via venipuncture) from study participants in Arkansas. With appropriate personal protection equipment and in accordance with OSHA and CDC guidelines, the Research Phlebotomist will travel around the state to conduct clinic visits and home visits as needed. Applicants must have a valid state driver’s license, insurance and reliable transportation to conduct study visits. Applicants bilingual in Spanish and English are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:


Collection, Transport and Storage of Biological specimens

  • Collects venous blood, saliva and blood spot samples, questionnaires and study forms from participants via home or clinic visits following standard operating procedures to facilitate compliance with all institutional and governmental policies and regulations.
  • Transports/stores/ships samples and study forms to UAMS campus following standard operating procedures to facilitate compliance with all institutional and governmental policies and regulations.
  • Processes samples using standard operating procedures to facilitate compliance with all institutional and governmental policies and regulations.
  • Meets weekly and monthly project goals for data collection.
  • Stores samples and record samples in electronic inventory at central Lab
  • Maintains supplies and essentials for study.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Maintains accurate study records.


IRB, Research Integrity and Compliance, HIPAA

  • Obtains and maintain HIPAA training annually.
  • Acquires and maintains study required regulatory training e.g. Good Clinical Practice and Human Subject Protection which can be obtained via Citi Training.
  • Adheres to study confidentiality policies, maintain study participant confidentiality and exhibit professional conduct.
  • Performs quality control steps on data entry and data management.
  • Audits participant files.
  • Documents and reports protocol deviations to the Center’s IRB representative to address and ensure regulatory compliance.


Provide research support for other ongoing Center projects

  • Conducts follow-up phone calls to study participants as needed
  • Manages study files using study related databases

Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED plus 1 year of phlebotomy experience
  • Current Licensed Phlebotomist in Arkansas (i.e., passed the National Council Licensure Examination).
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a variety of personalities under stressful circumstances.
  • Must have excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak on the phone in a clear and professional manner, ability to adhere to standardized procedures and policy.
  • Must have daily access to reliable transportation and be able to travel throughout the state. May involve overnight stays occasionally.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with the ability to interface at all levels including management internally and externally (encompasses verbal, written, interpersonal, listening)
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA, and IRB regulations for human research.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to carry/transport travel bag with supplies and biospecimens to and from participant homes and to UAMS lab


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in a clinical setting; 2+ years of experience with collection of biological specimens (includes blood collection via venipuncture)
  • phlebotomy diploma from an accredited community college or program
  • 3+ years in a clinical or public health research project
  • 1+ year experience interviewing patients or participants for a research study
  • 3+ years of experience with data collection for a clinical or epidemiologic research study, including collection of biological specimens
  • CPR/BLS Certification
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred
