Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – Covenant Eye Care, PA – Gastonia, NC

We are seeking a part-time, experienced CMA, RMA or Ophthalmic Assistant to work on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, to assist our physicians by providing preliminary medical and diagnostic patient evaluations.

POSITION SUMMARY: This position assists Ophthalmologists and Optometrists by obtaining medical histories, performing preliminary eye function testing, and explaining to patients about medication or procedures, preparing the patient for the exam and beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements. Performs instrument maintenance and automated tests; sets up operating room instruments and may assist with minor surgeries; completes data forms and paperwork for clinical visits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Review patient chart prior to physician exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be needed.

Gather essential medical information from patients and enter in EHR. Perform initial patient exams which includes patient history, vision test, intraocular pressure test, pupil evaluation.

Perform automated and manual testing which may include auto and manual refraction and auto keratometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, tonometry, confrontation visual fields, Amsler Grid test, Schirmer test, endothelial cell count test, potential acuity meter test, brightness acuity test, Humphrey visual field, and OCT testing.

Perform basic slit lamp examinations, basic ocular motility testing; administer ophthalmic drops and ointments and apply ocular dressings and shields.

Assist with outpatient surgical procedures.

Transcribe results of patient exams in medical record as physician dictates during the exam.

Develop positive and effective relationships with patients and their families.

Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of ophthalmic instruments.

Perform administrative tasks such as responding to inquiries on messaging and voice mail systems.

Assist with appointments and telephone screening activities. Answer STAT phone take messages and relay to appropriate individuals.

Under direction of physician, communicate with pharmacies regarding prescription refills and record prescriptions in patient charts.

File test results, forms, and letters into medical records.

Perform stocking and maintenance functions. Maintain physical environment of workup and exam rooms. Clean and stock rooms daily and maintain appropriate supply per par levels. Assist with ordering medical/office supplies.

Patient Facing Communication: Ability to effectively communicate expectation of therapy and services using terminology patients can understand in a friendly and positive way.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE: CMA, RMA required. Valid and active certificate from JCAHPO as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician or as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant is a plus but is NOT required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Customer Service and organizational skills, data entry, written and verbal communication skills, maintain positive team-oriented attitude with an attention to details.
