Oncology Pharmacist – Starling Physicians – Wethersfield, CT

Starling Physicians is seeking full-time Pharmacist in our Hematology/Oncology department.

The Pharmacist will dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provide information to patients about medications and their use. May advise physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects of medications.

Key Accountabilities

  • Reviews prescriptions to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability. Provides information and advice to providers and clinical staff regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage adjustments, and proper medication storage.
  • Assesses the identity, strength, or purity of medications. Compound and dispense medications as prescribed by providers by calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients including parenteral medications such as biologics and chemotherapy utilizing state and federal statutes and best practice.
  • Maintains records such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, inventories, and registries of narcotics and controlled drugs.
  • Plans, implements, and maintains policy and procedures for mixing, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals according to state and federal policies, laws, and guidelines including USP < 797> to ensure quality, security, and proper disposal. Ensures hazardous drug handling policies and procedures are correctly implemented and kept up to date.
  • Offers health promotion and prevention activities. Advises customers on the selection of medication brands, medical equipment, and health care supplies.
  • Collaborates with other health care professionals to plan, monitor, review, and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of drugs and drug regimens, providing advice on drug applications and characteristics.
  • Analyzes prescribing trends to monitor patient compliance and adherence to treatment plans. Monitors for harmful interactions, and compliance to national treatment guidelines.
  • Orders and purchases pharmaceutical supplies, medical supplies, and drugs promoting inventory control strategies.
  • Other duties as requested and assigned.

Relationships (Reports to, Supervises)

  • Reports directly to Chief Operating Officer.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with providers, managers, other administrative staff, vendors, patients and public.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Additional Skills & Requirements)

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
  • Minimum 3-5 years chemo mixing experience required.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of policies and regulations pertaining to the disbursement of pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration.
  • Ability to perform basic patient assessments and referrals.
  • Ability to design and implement systems necessary to collect, maintain, and analyze data.
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.

Working Conditions, Physical Requirements

  • Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, preparations and other conditions common to a physician’s office.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Support function will occur within various clinical settings and workspaces.
  • Incumbent may be required to work at any facility based on operation need, and schedule may vary.
  • Physical demands may also include lifting and carrying equipment up to 30 lbs.
  • Other physical requirements include speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person at normal volumes; vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screen, forms, etc.; and good manual dexterity.
