Research Support Specialist – Stony Brook Medicine – Stony Brook, NY

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience in a research setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Neuroscience, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Biomedical Engineering, Medicine. Experience in human subjects research. Experience involving direct interaction with psychiatric or neurological patient populations. Experience working in a hospital or medical center setting. Experience in research or clinical administration, such as coordinating patient visits for physicians and/or clinical researchers. Experience with patients with schizophrenia and/or substance use disorder. Experience handling and processing biological specimens. Experience with imaging modalities (MRI or PET).

Brief Description of Duties:

The Research Support Specialist (RSS) will support behavioral (e.g., laboratory tasks, specimen collection) and brain imaging (e.g., MRI, PET, EEG, etc.) clinical research studies of patients with schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and healthy individuals. The RSS will directly interact with study participants, scanner technicians, and other research personnel (principal investigators, MDs, etc.). The RSS will also accompany participants to MRI and PET scans, running multiple behavioral and imaging tasks as well as collecting study-related information. Travel to drug treatment facilities and mental health clinics for patient recruitment or onsite study procedures may be required occasionally. The RSS will set up and utilize computer and other specialized research equipment and may be trained as a back-up MRI scanning technician. The RSS will also maintain the integrity of collected data in an electronic database, update the study protocol documents as needed, and ensure compliance with all Institutional Review Board policies. The successful incumbent must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.

  • Conduct study procedures, including MRI, PET, and behavioral testing.
  • Recruit, screen, and schedule research participants.

  • Maintain study charts for ensuring IRB compliance.

  • Help maintain a federal funded study budget with respect to participant payments, receipt reconciliation, Principal Investigator travel, and ordering study supplies.
  • Assist in managing a team of volunteer research assistants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
