Certified Medical Assistant (Pediatric experience) – Doctor’s Medical Center of Miami – Coral Springs, FL

Job Summary/Objective:

The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for performing a variety of duties working collaboratively with the medical provider and care coordinators/site coordinator. The MA is involved in both the clinical and clerical duties of the practice in order to deliver optimal patient care services within the scope of the medical assistant’s professional expertise.

  • Interview patient and data entry on EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system according to DMC policy and procedure regarding encounters notes included but do not limited to:
  • Check your appointment book for the date.
  • Check your list task to review if you have any task pending. (Patient calls for appointment or test results abnormal, medication refill, etc.).
  • Review patient chart and update (proper filing on medical records) pending labs (If labs were done and results were not in chart look in unmatched results), studies (image and others reports), previous PCP, specialist visit and hospitalization or ER report (Patient needs to sign a HIPPA request).
  • Inquire patient’s chief complain (their reason for visit), vital signs, review allergies and current medication (report to your doctor if patient changed or stopped any medication) and pharmacy that the patient is using.
  • Review MA form to update any change (PMH, social and surgical history) and perform pending HEDIS and meaningful uses measurements.
  • Check if any previous orders were made on the patient and that reports are scanned in the system (if order was done, close it and all pending or duplicated task on the system).
  • Place request order for screening test and vaccination according company policy & procedure protocol and previous coordination with patient’s provider in charge (preorder for physician authorization during encounter)
  • Perform low complexity medical procedures (office procedures): blood sugar level, INR level, minor wound care, oral medication, IM, SC and intradermal injections, EKG, spirometry test, urine dipstick, pregnancy test, flu test and rapid strep test, PPD administration and reading. Document in the EHR any test done or any other procedure ordered by the physician (Order must be completed at time of performing the test).
  • Maintain close contact and observation to any patient needs while waiting in the exam rooms. Make sure patient is comfortable and advice that MD will come soon.
  • Assist the provider’s needs during medical examination; Positioning, undress and dressing patient, procedure assistance (wound care, abscess drainage, etc.), chaperoning service with female patient during breast or genital exam and when request by provider.
  • Assist with Medication refills and send electronic request to the physician for medication refill. Answer pharmacy or patient phone calls (when available and not interviewing patient’s) concerning medication refills; review and solve any complains or issue, prior authorization documentations for provider signature and other medication solution under provider supervision.
  • Contact patient by phone and other means as physician request for: Medical follow up appointments, confirmation of procedure, specialist’s appointments, hospital follow up and others.
  • Maintain and update high risk patient list and periodically discuss with providers.
  • Maintain and update medical supplies, equipment and medication inventory as well as review expiration day all meds and current active status of all medical equipment.
  • Supervise the hygiene and clearness of every exam room.
  • Coordinate the transfer and stay with the patient until EMT (emergency medical team) arrived during an emergency and patient transfer to another facility. MA also is responsible of 911 call and presentation to EMT under provider supervision.
  • Review the next day patient appointment list and coordinate for pending labs, image and record document from specialist and hospital.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a healthcare setting. This role requires regular traveling to various locations. This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. Works in an office and throughout the building daily.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, bending, kneeling, and stooping all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Pushing and pulling heavy objects. Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients. Position requires light to moderate work with 50 pounds’ maximum weight to lift and carry.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position in a healthcare facility which is open from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required

Required Education and Experience

  • Medical Assistant certification from accredited school.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Certification from formal training program required.
  • Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) required.
  • The MA must be certified by the AAMA and recertify every 5 years.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • 2 plus years of experience in a pediatric setting.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Computer experience required, EMR preferred, Greenway Preferred.
  • One to two years’ pediatric office experience preferred.
