The Financial Advocate is responsible for providing patients with a positive financial experience by helping patients navigate and understand the potential financial liability, their insurance benefit, and in the instance the patient is uninsured, screen patient for assistance eligibility. This position will collect payments, create estimates, review and explain patient insurance benefits as they apply to the services scheduled/performed. Identify and assist uninsured patients with applying for any and all applicable government funding programs in which the patient may qualify based on individual program criteria.

Job Duties May Include:

  • Coordinates financial clearance for all patients to include pre-registration, eligibility and benefits, referral coordination, authorization requirements and expressing financial expectations using on-line systems, telephonic verification, and faxing to update and verify patient demographic and payer information.
  • Maintains complete records of all patients applying for indigent or financial assistance to include the application, proof of income, the acceptance/denial letter, and other applicable documentation.
  • Maintain a knowledge base and certification (if required) of all programs available for indigent funding including but not limited to: New Mexico Medicaid, Medicare, NM Health Exchange, NM Insurance Pool, County Indigent Programs, Lions Eye Bank, Emergency Eye Care, and ASC Indigent Funds.
  • Creates detailed notes in the system to reflect all actions performed on an account.
  • Performs follow-up functions to correct inaccurate/missing data elements.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries, questions, situations related to registration practices, billing and insurance requirements in a timely, effective and professional manner.
  • Pre-Registration: communicates effectively with patients regarding their patient financial responsibility as well as collects copays, deductibles and co-insurance prior to date of service.
  • Advises supervisor/manager of problems and potential problems as soon as possible.
  • Takes ownership of all appointments assigned. Personal actions demonstrate accountability for the outcomes of the facility.
  • Works closely with supervisors, clinic directors, physicians and all members of the physician office/surgery center to resolve problems or issues related to patient’s registration, financial issues or authorization issues. Notifies the appropriate physician’s office of patient’s inability to meet their estimated financial obligation/authorization requirements within timeline outlined prior to date of service to determine need to reschedule or proceed.
  • Follows work prioritization standards as established, using standard tools to complete work in the most effective manner established and enters appropriate account status codes. Documents work activity clearly, concisely and completely.

Skills/Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Medical terminology knowledge
  • Must be able to complete NM Medicaid PE/MOSAA Certification within first 60 days of employment
  • Must be able to travel to meet patients if required to complete the indigent application process
  • Basic computer knowledge including Microsoft Office Excel and Word
  • Bi-lingual preferred
  • Minimum Experience: 1 year as Healthcare Financial Counselor, Insurance Verification, or Healthcare Revenue Cycle-Patient Accounting
  • Preferred Experience: 2+ years as Healthcare Financial Counselor, Healthcare Insurance Verification, or Healthcare Revenue Cycle-Patient Accounting
