Wage Mental Health Assistant – Shift Differentials and Weekend/Holiday Supplements Available for Eligible Employees – Virginia Southwestern VA Ment Hlth Inst – Marion, VA

The Nursing Division at SWVMHI is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive nursing service designed to support the primary mission of a busy state psychiatric inpatient facility, providing excellent services through a 24-hour application of the nursing process to meet the biopsychosocial needs of the individuals we serve, their families, and other customers. SWVMHI, with 179 beds, provides services for more than 800 patients per year in units for Adult Acute, Adult Long Term, and Geriatric patients with a total staff of approximately 560 full and part-time employees.

SWVMHI
seeks energetic, dedicated Mental Health Assistants to work part-time variable hours up to 29 hours per week as needed.

Wage Mental Health Assistants (MHAs) work with Psychiatric Care Technicians and Licensed Practical Nurses under supervision of a Registered Nurse to:

  • Assist in providing quality care as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Maintain accountability in a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment
  • Create healthy interpersonal interactions on adult acute admissions unit, extended rehabilitation service, and limited on geriatric unit (due to CMS regulations, after 120 days of employment, direct service associates need to have CNA)
  • Observe and report feedback regarding interventions, behaviors, physical and emotional well-being, and other situations
  • Document and communicate


Mental Health Assistants are directly supervised by a RN and partnered with a
LPN
or
PCT.


The knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the work are:

  • Basic knowledge of human behavior, age-specific needs, and personality development
  • Knowledge of basic treatment measures to promote mental health appropriate to the adult, developmentally disabled or impaired, and/or geriatric populations
  • Vision and hearing adequate to recognize and respond to hazardous situations and ensure safety at facility
  • Ability to observe and describe observations orally, in writing, and electronically
  • Ability to work effectively with staff in a team approach in different work-groups with short notice
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, take initiative, organize duties, and manage time
  • Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities
  • Appropriately assist in crisis or problem situations
  • Perform repetitious walking and/or standing, bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain/transfer/transport and/or escort individuals, and provide assistance with activities of daily living
  • Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency
  • Successful completion of training: TOVA (Therapeutic Options of Virginia), CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), Motivational Interviewing Skills
  • Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement

Recovery-oriented nursing care at
SWVMHI
incorporates collaborative practice with an interdisciplinary team approach. There is an emphasis on orientation, on-site training, continuing education, and cross training with a focus on psychiatric nursing. Classified employees enjoy a highly competitive benefits package. There is a mandatory four to six week orientation program, which includes two weeks of psychiatric preceptorship with cross training. Must be flexible to work mainly day shift hours for three to five weeks after hire to complete orientation. Must be able to work weekends and holidays and be able to complete the six week orientation program.

This position has been authorized on a wage (hourly) basis. Wage employees cannot exceed a total of 1,500 hours in a 365-day period. The 365-day period is considered your “work year” and runs from May 1 – April 30 each year.
