Primary Care Nurse Practitioner – Worcester Recovery Ctr & Hosp – Worcester, MA

The Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital operated by The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a dynamic candidate for a Nurse Practitioner position. Providers in this position serve as a primary care provider for mentally ill patients in a long-term care facility.

Please Note: This is a temporary full time, 40-hour position scheduled to end in December 2022. The schedule is 1st Shift- 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday and Sunday as days off.

Candidates Please Note: We are eager to announce the expansion of two (2) inpatient units over the next 2-3 months with the anticipation of onboarding a combination of clinical, non-clinical, facility and other program related staff. Your understanding is greatly appreciated as we review all applications and begin stages of interviews.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Perform admission, routine, annual, and as needed focused medical examinations and manage acute and chronic medical needs of WRCH patients.
  • Execute the coordination of assessments and treatment plans as well as:
    • Ordering and interpreting labs, EKGs, and imaging studies
    • Perform minor surgical procedures
    • Make appropriate specialist referrals
    • Perform age-appropriate screening tests
    • Order appropriate vaccinations
  • Work on a multidisciplinary team as the medical provider and make recommendations for the patients’ treatment plan.
  • Monitor patients’ response to treatments and medication interventions.
  • Knowledge of psychiatry and psychiatric medications and the comorbidities and side effects of psychiatric medications and mental illness.
  • Document in an appropriate and timely manner in the medical record.

Special Requirements:

  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Current and valid certification (or eligibility for certification and application for first available nurse practitioner certification) as a nurse practitioner by a national professional accrediting body.
  • Current and valid authorization by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Valid DEA and Mass Controlled Substance License issued to Provider.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals with serious, persistent mental illness and substance abuse
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.
  • American Sign Language (ASL)

About Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH):
Located on over 100 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) is part of an integrated network of effective, efficient and culturally competent mental health services. It provides intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who live in Massachusetts, as well as individuals requiring specialized court ordered evaluations. WRCH provides inpatient services to 260 inpatient adults, inclusive of a Deaf Inpatient Mental Health Service: 30 inpatient adolescents and 30 residential adolescents, in either an Intensive Residential Treatment Program (IRTP) or a Behavioral Intensive Residential Treatment Program (BIRT).

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. *

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated based on the proportion of the requirements completed.

Current and valid authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
