Job summary: Dental Assistants perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties, and work chair-side as dentists examine and treat patients. They make patients as comfortable as possible, prepare them for treatment, and obtain their dental records.

Summary of Essential Job Functions: The duties of a dental assistant are among the most comprehensive and varied in the dental office. The dental assistant performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills. Although state regulations vary, responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures
  • Taking and processing dental radiographs (x-rays)
  • Asking about the patient’s medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse
  • Serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment
  • Helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment
  • Providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling)
  • Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health;

(e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)

  • Taking impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts (models of teeth)
  • Performing office management tasks that often require the use of a personal computer
  • Communicating with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing and ordering supplies)
  • Helping to provide direct patient care

Competencies:

  • X-ray certification and coronal polishing certification (or scheduled to complete)
  • Dentrix a plus!
  • Friendly, energetic and have an outstanding personality
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) a plus.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduation and Certification from a dental assisting school
  • Experience: 2+ years in a pediatric dental office setting preferred
  • Certifications: NA
  • Computer Skills: Computer Literate
  • Language Ability: Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to remain calm during stressful customer or employee situations.
  • English/Spanish Bilingual strongly preferred.

Work Environment/ Physical Demands: *The work environment includes work within a dental clinic. The work environment may vary significantly and may include loud, fast-paced, and rapidly changing conditions. All employees working within a dental clinic have potential exposure to blood or air borne pathogens, as is typical in a healthcare setting. Position may require long periods of sitting and standing. Manual dexterity will be required for handling small objects. Close and distance vision will be required and the ability to shift focus rapidly. Nature of work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with patients, their parents, and staff.? Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift/carry up to 30 pounds and be able to twist, turn, bend and stoop.

Pay: $12.00 – $14.00 per hour
