SUMMARY OF JOB FUNCTION:

The primary responsibility of the Health Information Management Technician is to support GFHN Health Centers with accurate and timely scanning and indexing of documents for the patient electronic health record. Additionally to ensure requests for release of patient records are processed efficiently

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Document Sort and Preparation

· Receiving documents in batch form daily from the Health Centers, the Health Information Management Technician will review, sort, and prep each document in accordance with established protocol to ensure each item is properly prepared for submission through the document scanner, and that each item contains the appropriate information for scanning (Patient Name, DOB, MRN, and Provider name if needed).

2. Document Scan and Import

· The Health Information Management Technician will scan each document as per protocol, ensure it is indexed to the appropriate document type and submitted to the correct provider’s Provider Approval Queue (PAQ) when necessary

· The Health Information Management Technician will import each document as per protocol, from the saved folder and ensure it is indexed to the appropriate document type and submitted to the correct provider’s Provider Approval Queue (PAQ) when necessary

· Operates scanning equipment according to established procedures to convert information on a paper document into a digital image that can be accessed and viewed by a computer terminal.

3. Document Retention

· The Health Information Management Technician will keep all paper documents on file in accordance to the established protocol, then send to shred at the appropriate time.

4. Release of Information

· Following established protocol, the Health Information Management Technician will process requests for Release of Information and document the information in the patients PHI Log, maintaining

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

· High School Diploma

· Knowledge of Medical Terminology preferred

· Organizational and time management skills. Attention to detail

· Ability to process or understand technical manuals and learn new techniques quickly

· Ability to assume sole and independent responsibility for various assigned projects and tasks

· Ability to work in a team environment

· Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to significant matters

· Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with people with different backgrounds

· Strong ability to identify potential issues and participate in their resolution

· Excellent written and verbal communications skills

· Provided with appropriate training, demonstrates knowledge and understanding of document scanning hardware and software functions

· Demonstrates basic knowledge in utilizing a desktop computer

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear.
  • Ability to sit at a desk or computer terminal for 5-7 hours daily.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Works inside & outside including motor vehicle travel between sites.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.20 – $19.25 per hour
