JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Medical Technical Assistant 2/LPN assists residents and faculty of University Family Physicians in providing quality patient care through administrative, clinical, and other duties. This position assists physicians with patient care by administering medications, documentation of patient care within an electronic medical record, clinical testing, assisting with exams, procedures, minor surgery and involvement in resident education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares patients for physician by obtaining vital signs weights/measurements per protocols.
  • Verifies patient’s medications and allergies.
  • Prepares patient and room for procedures.
  • Assists physician with procedures and exams including OB care, pediatric visits, vasectomies, paps, colposcopies, leeps, cryotherapy, rectal exams, punch biopsy, lesion/cyst removal, suture and staple removal and other minor surgical procedures.
  • Obtains EKG’s, pulse oximetry, orthostatics, vision screening, tympanograms, nebulizer treatment, peak flow readings, pulmonary functions tests and application of carious splints and dressings.
  • Obtains and process various labs including UA, rapid strep, flu and mono, UCG, PT/INR, hemocult, HgBA1C, hematocrit, and blood glucose.
  • Provides patient education including administration of medications, nebulizers, blood pressure and glucose monitoring, wound care, and pediatric care.
  • Perform administrative duties including initiating and returning phones calls; faxing and receiving records, orders, and requests to and from other facilities and physician offices; scheduling tests and procedures for patients.
  • Obtains precertification through patients’ insurance company for tests, procedures, and admission to the hospital.
  • Make referrals to specialists and agencies.
  • Refills medications per protocol or physicians’ written or verbal order.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Good interpersonal and communications skills. Accurate maintenance of an EMR, Clinical Skills: Administering injections, accurate measurement of vital signs, operation of various clinical equipment such as EKG, pulmonary function, vision screening, and minor lab testing procedures (UA, rapid strep, mono and flu, urine pregnancy). Experience in Family Medicine, Pediatric or OB office preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: CMA, CCMA or LPN. Must be Certified or Registered (Medical Assistant) or Licensed in Tennessee (LPN). (CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)
