JOB SUMMARY
The phlebotomy student participates in a formal training program and is responsible for collecting laboratory specimens through blood collection techniques under the supervision of Licensed Practical Nurse, Medical Assistant, or phlebotomist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – Other duties may be assigned.
- Successfully completes the classroom and clinical portions of the phlebotomy training program.
- Follows infection prevention and patient safety practices of the NCH Healthcare System.
- Demonstrates accuracy with patient registration and clinical documentation.
- Enters orders, correctly labels, and receives specimens correctly into lab computer system.
- Performs specimen problem resolution and adds, cancels, & modifies orders correctly.
- Triage specimens according to insurance coverage i.e. Medicare (NCH), LabCorp or Quest.
- Demonstrates a high level of customer service.
- Collects and processes lab specimens.
- Answers phones and schedules patients for lab appointments.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Current certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association required prior to starting the phlebotomy training program
- Basic computer skills
