Respiratory Care Practitioner (Full-Time) – Glenview Terrace Nursing Center – Wheeling, IL

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides for all respiratory care services in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Provides routine oxygen therapy, respiratory treatments, intensive and prolonged respiratory care to residents.

Professional:

1. Must be a graduate of an AMA approved school of respiratory care.

2. Must be credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care as either a Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician or a Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Physical:

1. Evidence of good physical and mental health.

2. Physical appearance: Must present a pleasing image to residents and public and act as an example to employees.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Works in a clean well-lighted, temperature controlled office environment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

A. A minimum of 40 hours per week.

FUNCTIONS:

A. Support the facility’s philosophy of care and strive to achieve its goals and objectives.

B. Administers all types of respiratory care treatments including routine, intensive and prolonged respiratory care as required.

C. Sets up and monitors oxygen therapy equipment and supplies utilizing delivery devices such as oxygen concentrators and oxygen tanks. Sets up and monitors oxygen appliances such as 02 cannula, 02 masks, continuous high humidity aerosols, tracheotomy masks and venture masks.

D. Performs respiratory screenings all patients admitted to the facility.

E. Performs respiratory assessments on patients if requested by the facility or physician.

F. Documents all respiratory assessment results on the respiratory assessment sheet and places sheet in the patient medical record.

G. Contacts and communicates the patient respiratory assessment results and respiratory treatment plan recommendations to the attending physician.

H. Writes a weekly progress note and a discharge note on all respiratory care patients treated in the facility.

I. Performs the following respiratory care procedures on patients; chest physical therapy, handheld nebulizer therapy, IPPE therapy, Incentive spirometry, metered dose inhaler therapy, oximetry, peak flow monitoring, ultrasonic nebulizer therapy as order by the physician.

J. Administers bronchodilator, wetting agents or other respiratory medications as ordered by attending physician.

K. Performs daily routine tracheotomy care and may change the patient’s inner cannula and / or the tracheotomy tube.

L. Charts all therapy results on the treatment sheets and places the sheet in the patient’s medical record.

M. Initiates and maintains all other records for Medicare and legal documentation.

N. Changes equipment, supplies and circuits as necessary to ensure proper function and in order to maintain proper infection control procedures.

O. Attends patient care conferences within the facility as required.

P. Teaches respiratory in-service education programs for the facility if necessary.

Q. Assists families and visitors when appropriate.

R. Follow established fire, disaster, and evacuation policies and procedures.

S. Perform all other duties as directed by the DON and Administrator.
