Job Summary:

The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for the operation of the Hospital during times Administrative staff are not present or available. Reports directly to the Nursing Services Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides Hospital supervision during the absence of the Director of Patient Care Services, Nursing Services Director, Program Managers and other Administrative personnel.
  • Complies with all company safety policies and practices. Ensures patient safety at all times while following unit and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Acts as the Hospital’s representative on duty for families and/or patients verbalizing concerns/problems relating to the Hospital stay or admission.
  • Performs rounds to all inpatient treatment units to provide monitoring, supervision, direction, and assistance as needed.
  • Assures staffing is accurate according to established guidelines and unit needs.
  • Assures pre-admission intake assessments are completed accurately and followed up per Hospital policy, provides referrals as needed or assists with admissions. Utilizes computer as needed including medical charting.
  • Acquires medications which are unavailable, as needed, per Hospital/pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Completes all admission office paperwork correctly and in a timely manner. Communicates any difficulty to the appropriate admission staff.
  • Has knowledge of the legal responsibilities of a Registered Professional Nurse and the WV Registered Nurse’s Code of Conduct; providing a positive role model for staff, patients, and other treatment team members. Must be aware and follow established nursing and hospital standards, policies and procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Assures any suspect Adverse Drug Reaction, Infection Control or Incident Report forms are completed thoroughly and accurately, at the time of occurrence. Assures that the follow-up necessary is completed and documented per policy/procedure.
  • Assures Infection Control/Prevention, Pharmacy and all other Hospital Department policies and procedures are followed.
  • Monitors, evaluates and communicates any identified training needs of staff to the Nursing Services Director on an ongoing basis.
  • Assists with in-services/formal training as needed.
  • Identifies safety hazards and intervenes on an emergency basis, reporting such information to the Safety Manager and Nursing Services Director.
  • Acts as a resource person for the Hospital Staff regarding Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assists with documentation of personnel issues as needed.
  • Seeks assistance/support from the Director of Patient Care Services, Nursing Services Director, Program Managers, Administrator on-call as well as other Administrative staff as may be necessary.
  • Participates in staff development on an ongoing basis.
  • Continues self-development by attending in-services (internal and external), reading current articles and minutes from committee meetings, and by seeking opportunities to learn new skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Registered Nurse with BSN preferred.
  • Experience in dealing with sensitive personnel issues, working with and knowledge of psychiatric inpatient treatment services for children, adolescents, adults, chemically dependent and/or dually diagnosed patients, and previous charge/management experience.
  • Ability to make decisions considering the following: the patient and his/her family, the Hospital, staff resources, various governmental regulations and current policies and procedures.
  • Ability to remain calm and positive in stressful situations, working as a team member, and be fair, firm, consistent and caring.
  • Ability to be assertive with proven leadership and communications skills.

Certificates, License, Registration:

  • Licensed by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Nurses.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Knowledge of and experience with psychotropic medications.
  • Computer proficiency – ability to complete job duties utilizing various devices and software including Avatar (Medical Charting).
