JOB SUMMARY

Performs administrative and certain clinical duties with the presence of a physician, or if functioning in the treatment area, under the direction of the RN. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, facilitating charge entry, and other clinic operations as assigned. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, and drawing blood via peripheral venous route. Follows appropriate chain of command for communicating to the physician if working in the clinic; if functioning in the treatment area, the RN is in charge and responsible for all care provided.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Obtains medical information (vital signs, height/weight,) and records pertinent information in the medical record.
  • Schedules appointments for patients.
  • Shows patients to examination rooms/treatment stations and prepares them for the physician or treatment area, the RN.
  • Communicates with patients about normal tests as directed by the provider if in the clinic, or if functioning in the treatment area, the RN.
  • If trained, collects blood via peripheral venous draw, tissue or other laboratory specimens, logs the specimens and prepares them for testing as directed by the provider if in the clinic, or if functioning in the treatment area, the RN.
  • Assists physicians with the examination process of the patients, supplying necessary materials.
  • Provides limited prescription information to pharmacies according to physician order in the clinic setting, or if functioning in the treatment area, only as directed by the RN.
  • Prepares exam/treatment areas for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean. Responsible for stocking supplies, inventory control, and procedure/treatment tray preparation.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests and sample analyses, ie Clinitek Urine Analyzer after RN assessment.
  • Contacts medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for physician ordered tests/procedures in the clinic, and as directed by the RN in the treatment area.
  • Performs duties consistent with OSHA safety standards.
  • Performs accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times within scope of practice.
  • Communicates using appropriate medical terminology.
  • Performs duties consistent with Joint Commission standards.
  • Respects and complies with HIPAA laws.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education / Experience / License and Certifications

  • Medical Assistant certification is preferred, but not required.
  • High School Diploma or GED, required.
  • Current CNA license is required.
  • Minimum one year clinical experience is preferred.
  • Current BLS certification required.

Additional Skills

  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both reading and writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Prioritization, and organizational skills.
