POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Diagnostic Lab Billing Specialist

Department/Facility: Billing

Minimum Education and/or Experience:

Associate degree in Medical Coding

OR

High School Diploma and at least 2 years experience in medical billing

Position Summary

Perform all billing activities of laboratory including posting insurance payments, billing patients for services not covered by insurance and handling denied claims and claim appeals.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Verify and document patient insurance benefits and eligibility
  • Communicate insurance benefits and eligibility to patients
  • Verify that completed and signed billing documents are obtained from patient
  • Enter insurance and billing related information in patient database and verify the accuracy of this information
  • Maintain documentation of insurance and billing related information in patient chart and in electronic patient files
  • Coordinate the process of prior authorization for genetic testing, when needed
  • Submit claims to insurance
  • Follow up weekly on claim status.
  • Perform insurance claim follow-ups for insurance denials and appeals
  • Appeal a denied claim
  • File complaints with appropriate regulatory agencies if claims are not processed correctly and on time
  • Develop appropriate payment plans for patients
  • Process patient statements, post transactions and verify accuracy of invoices
  • Review patient billing accounts
  • Post and reconcile payments to patient accounts
  • Participate in developing CPs’ procedures and update processes and forms as applicable.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of financial records
  • Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel and bookkeeping
  • Following the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, accessioning, test analyses, reporting to lab director and maintaining records of patient results
  • Adhering to laboratory’s quality control policies and documenting all QC activities
  • Being able to identify problems that may adversely affect reimbursement and notifying the supervisor
  • Documenting all corrective actions taken
  • Generating billing reports
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned including obtaining network contracts and credentialing with insurance providers

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: From $13.50 per hour
