Project Manager, Hardware Prototyping – Facebook – Menlo Park, CA

We are looking for a Prototyping Project Manager who will be responsible for managing the entire logistical scope from initial prototype request to final delivery. Communication and technical aptitude are critical in this role as the Prototyping Project Manager will be the liaison between Hardware Engineers and the prototyping team and will assist with determining project priority and feasibility. The Prototyping Project Manager will manage and develop a network of partners and suppliers used to support operations, varying from consumable procurement to outsource manufacturing. The Prototyping Project Manager determines core competencies of the service, defines interfaces with partners and customers, and sets a framework for prioritization and feasibility. Operational efficiency is key, and the Prototyping Project Manager will play a critical role in continuing to build a strong foundation for the team to build from.The Area 404 prototyping team includes a full suite of capabilities to accomplish rapid prototype manufacturing, board de-bug and bring-up, as well as whatever components, sensors, and concepts our customers require. We move fast and are looking for a person who is driven to find the most effective and efficient ways to solve complex problems related to prototyping.

  • Lead overall strategic planning and execution for project management service.
  • Responsible for managing the day-to-day workflow through the shop and ensuring that projects continue to move along smoothly.
  • Interface with Hardware groups within Facebook and understand their needs and how the shop can support them.
  • Collect & analyze data, information, and research through quantitative and qualitative mechanisms to make decisions and recommendations on critical strategic issues.
  • Manage and escalate organizational risks and issues as appropriate, establish success metrics, and ensure performance is tracked and measured.
  • Identify key efficiencies and strategic capabilities to keep Program Management services positioned to meet customer needs.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with external suppliers and internal partners to build a strong support network.
  • Manage the outsourcing of manufactured prototypes.
  • Support future endeavors including researching new technologies, space planning, and equipment procurement.
  • Willing to participate in a broad range of needs in the shop.
  • Bachelors or Associates degree in engineering, manufacturing or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in project management or in a manufacturing or prototyping environment.
  • Proven communication skills and experience managing a multitude of tasks.
  • Self-driven and experience working autonomously.
  • Experience planning and leading projects.
  • Detail oriented communication and documentation experience.
  • Masters in Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience in the development cycle of commercial products.
  • Understanding of CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, electro-mechanical assembly and 3D Printing.
  • Experience with architecture and design of electrical systems, including system controls, signals and systems, and electrical system integration into final product design and specifications.
  • Experience and knowledge of broad range of PCB technologies (e.g. Rigid, flex, hybrid, etc.).
