Lead Actuary, Risk Predictive Models – Humana – Green Bay, WI

As Lead Actuary of the Risk Predictive Models team, you have an opportunity to both learn more about predictive analytics and machine learning and to see it become very real in a key production context. In fact, you’ll be the overall business owner of predictive risk analytics for our new business and renewal rating, and will be part of ensuring end-to-end successful pushing forward of this frontier, including involvement with everything from statistical validation of models, to understanding and responding to the needs of business collaborators such as underwriters, to ensuring that both internal and external machine learning and IT partners have the guidance and help needed. Responsibilities

As leader of the Risk Predictive Models team, you will be a key contributor to helping Humana’s Employer Group Segment grow sustainably, allowing Humana to help members achieve lifelong well-being! This position is a critical role responsible for continuing forward our work to have the most accurate claims predictive models in the industry, using both internal and external data sources, and allowing us to offer the most competitive rates and to remove barriers to our pursuit of growth!

In this role, you will lead a direct team of technical associates and influence technical indirect partners, and must develop and apply knowledge of how to evaluate predictive risk model performance and improvements. Just as important, however, will be your leadership over the broader risk model initiative, ensuring the needs of business stakeholders are met, that true business value is being provided, that the most important improvements are getting the attention needed, and holding both yourself and others accountable for outstanding results.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • FSA with at least 1 year of healthcare experience, or ASA with at least 3 years of healthcare experience
  • MAAA
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate as a leader and to communicate with other areas of the business
  • Experience conveying complex analyses and concepts to non-technical audiences and leaders
  • Experience coding in at least one of R, Python, or SAS
  • Experience working with large datasets and analyzing complex and messy data
  • Demonstrated interest in learning new things and in encourage teammates to do so
  • Experience in more than two functions (e.g., modeling, pricing, rate filing, reporting & analysis, reserving or trending)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading a direct team of two or more reports
  • Experience building some types of machine learning models
  • Experience evaluating predictive risk models and/or incorporating them into actuarial analyses or production processes
  • Familiarity with medical claims data
