ASSISTANT ZOO DIRECTOR – City of Clovis – Clovis, NM

Job Description
This is a full time position working 40 hours per week under the direct supervision of the Zoo Director and the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director. The Assistant Zoo Director supervises and coordinates the activities of workers engaged in the care and feeding of Zoo animals and the maintenance and development of Zoo grounds and facilities. This position works forty (40) hours per week Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Summer and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Winter, with infrequent call back to duty after hours.

Typical Duties

• Supervises and assists with the activities of workers engaged in the care and exhibition of Zoo animals.

• Observes animals for any signs of illness, injury, breeding, births or deaths, and informs the Zoo Director.

• Inspects cages and pens for cleanliness and structural defects.

• Trains and assigns workers to various tasks and oversees treatment, preparation of food, feeding of animals, and maintenance and repair of Zoo grounds and improvements.

• Assists with employee records, supply requisitions, animal records, zoo permits.

• Responds to inquiries from the public and assists the Zoo Director in promoting Zoo interests.

• Supervises the purchasing of food items (all dietary needs) for Zoo animals within the budget limitations.

• Maintains written records of Zoo animals.

• Maintains and supervises the maintenance of Zoo equipment.

• Provides safety training for Zoo employees.

• Performs as acting Director in Zoo Director’s absence.

• Responsible for all construction and/or improvements on Zoo grounds, including all new exhibits, concrete, lumber and materials needed.

• Works with other Zoos and animal dealers in the purchase or loan of animals.

• Acts as Zoo liason to the BSA Venture Crew that volunteers at the Zoo, and Zoo’s attending Vet.

• Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the Zoo Director.

Manages the record keeping of personnel, permits, attendance and required animal records, USDA, US Fish & Wildlife Service, New Mexico Game & Fish Department.
