Director of Dental Hygiene – Clinica Family Health – Denver, CO

This job exists to: Work with Chief Dental Officer (CDO) to build a dental practice able to meet the need for dental services within our community and support a forward-thinking dental program. Partner with county-based Clinic Dental Directors (CDDs) and site-based Dental Hygienist Team Managers (DHTMs) to support the quality and efficiency of dental hygiene services. To build and support the strategic direction of dental hygiene-related programming and other organizational strategic initiatives, manage clinical administrative functions in the dental department and integrated services across departments, and provide clinical dental services.

  • Management

    • Day-to-day direct supervision/coaching of school-based dental hygienists, including hiring/firing authority and performance appraisals in coordination with the Clinic Dental Directors (CDDs).
    • Oversight and maintenance of materials for orientation, education, and training (assisted by Operations and Human Resources (HR)) of dental hygienists, including credentialing & privileging and orientation to electronic dental record (EDR), for all aspects of hygiene-related activities in the organization.
    • Assure hygiene productivity and efficiency and evaluate hygiene clinical quality, making use of reporting data to drive decisions and strategies for quality assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI), working in partnership with CDDs and DHTMs to implement strategies.
    • Support standardized practices across sites.
    • Partners with other CDDs and DTHMs for appropriate management of risk management concerns and complaints involving hygienist team, involving Dental Operations Director (DOD), and Chief Dental Officer (CDO) as appropriate.
  • Departmental Leadership

    • In conjunction with the CDO, stays abreast of guidelines and trends to provide oversight and continuous quality control of activities related to safety, including serving as Dental Infection Control Officer and Radiation and Safety Officer.
    • In partnership with Dental Operations Director (DOD), responsible for oversight, performance, and partnerships for outreach-based programs, including school based dental services.
    • Establishes and maintains relationships with hygiene training programs for recruitment pipeline and to support progressive dental education in alignment with Clinica’s values and care modalities.
    • Management of dental outreach activities in coordination with CDO, CDD, and DOD, including leadership and partnership on site-level integration with other lines of services as they relate to the Hygienist on the Pods program.
    • Maintains own administrative schedule as appropriate, leveraging administrative time to maintain optimal in-clinic FTE when possible or necessary.
    • Serves on committees across the organization as a representative of the dental department.
  • Strategic Leadership

    • Work in coordination with the CDDs and Dental Operations Director (DOD) to implement organizational and clinical strategic plans.
    • Effectively partners across the organization and departments to support organizational initiatives, including serving as an engaged representative for the dental department and Clinica.
  • Clinical Practice

    • Maintain own dental hygienist practice as defined by the Clinica guidelines.
    • Keeps abreast of evidence-based practices and innovations related to the dental hygiene practice and scope of work (including, but not limited to, prevention, practice models, non-surgical periodontal care, etc.) and effectively advocates and integrates these practices in standard ways into Clinica’s dental program, ensuring that dental hygiene is an integral part of a forward thinking and visionary dental program.
    • Exhibits positive leadership skills, actively striving to improve the patient and staff experience of Clinica, as well as strong communication skills, including willingness to grow and develop skills in motivational interviewing and shared decision-making.

    • Support the safety program by actively looking for opportunities to improve safety practices and evaluate staff for safety practices and ergonomic issues.

    • Knowledgeable of and compliant with all laws and regulations governing area of responsibility.
    • Responsible for reporting any potentially non-compliant conduct.
    • Cooperate fully with our Compliance Officer in upholding our Compliance Plan.

  • Manage and coach staff, initial and annual Performance Evaluations and disciplinary action as needed.

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:
Responsibility to hire, and evaluate Dental Hygienist Team Managers with input from the CDD and CDO. Responsible for helping to create a high quality, effective dental practice that meets the needs of Clinica’s service area.

Progress is reviewed quarterly and results are measured and formally evaluated annually.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of all phases of the field of dental hygiene.
  • Skill in the techniques of oral hygiene procedures and the use of equipment, instruments, and materials.
  • Knowledge and practice of preventative dentistry and ability to instruct patients individually and in groups.
  • Ability to evaluate clinical evidence and appropriate apply in clinical practice.
  • Understanding of quality assurance and quality improvement techniques.
  • Understanding of compliance and regulatory standards pertinent to scope of activities of job.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and staff.
  • Ability to work in a team environment required.

  • Sensitivity to low income and ethnic minority community a must.
  • Excellent coaching skills.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Compensation:
Approximately $81,000-$105,000 per year. All individual pay rates are calculated based on the candidate’s experience and internal equity.
