Director, Student Counseling and Health Services – Austin Peay State University – Clarksville, TN

The Director is responsible for enhancing and supervising a robust health services program and a comprehensive student-centered counseling program. In addition to supervising the operations of the Boyd Health Services and Student Counseling Services, the Director provides individual and group counseling, emergency services, substance abuse prevention programs, and human growth and development activities for students. The position reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

The Director has administrative responsibility for non-emergency acute medical treatment and health education for the University community. He/she is also responsible for promoting student learning by encouraging outcomes such as intellectual growth, ability to communicate effectively, capacity for realistic self-appraisal, enhanced self-esteem, clarification of values, leadership development, meaningful interpersonal relations, ability to work independently and collaboratively, social responsibility, appreciation of aesthetic and cultural diversity, and achievement of personal goals. Wellness and prevention programs will be provided in collaboration with other agencies of the University and community.

Founded in 1927, the school is named after former Tennessee Governor Austin Peay, a Clarksville native. Austin Peay is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. Austin Peay’s strategic plan focuses on five goals that will guide the University through the next 10 years. The five goals are growing enrollment, building student success, sustaining University growth, expanding diversity and enhancing communication.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Administration

  • Responsible for administration of all aspects of the University’s comprehensive student-oriented health services clinic and counseling program.
  • Provide supervision of health services and counseling staff, including clinical supervision of counselors, interns, and graduate assistants. Establish procedures for staff selection, training, and evaluation.
  • Oversee development, implementation, and review of Student Counseling and Health Services policies and procedures. Ensure that policies and procedures are well understood by all staff and are implemented in efficient and effective ways.
  • Integrate department goals and objectives with Division of Student Affairs strategic priorities. Monitor and report outcomes for strategic planning purposes.
  • Partner with colleagues within the department, across campus, and at other member institutions and throughout the region to optimize delivery of services. Recruit additional resources and deploy as needed.
  • Develop, manage, and report on departmental budgets.
  • Monitor staff workload and morale and provide support for staff professional development.
Direct care services

  • Provide brief therapy services, including individual, couples, and/or group counseling, to currently enrolled students.
  • Assist clients in identifying and utilizing other campus resources and services related to student success and well-being. Provide referrals to off-campus providers for students who require more specialized services.
  • Provide intake, triage, and other mental health assessments to ensure optimal delivery of services.
  • Respond to student mental health crises and provide after-hours emergency coverage as needed.
  • Maintain confidential case files and records.
Outreach and prevention services

  • Provide innovative outreach and prevention programs in key areas of student mental health and well-being.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students and serve as a general resource person where student mental health and well-being are concerned.
  • Provide consultation for faculty, staff, and students regarding individual students of concern who may be exhibiting signs of distress or dysfunction.
Other

  • Explore opportunities for continuous quality improvement in one’s area.
  • Serve on relevant University committees as needed.
  • Present and/or facilitate programs/panels at appropriate local, regional, and national meetings and conferences for professional development and to represent the department, the division, and the University.

– Research, write and obtain external funding from grants, foundations, and other gifts in kind.
– Responsible for the successful completion of the Biennial Drug Free School Act Report

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to effectively manage all aspects of counseling services.
  • Ability to provide non-medical supervision of the operation of Boyd Health Services.
  • Ability to effectively assess, provide therapy and evaluate students in need of counseling services.
  • Ability to effectively manage departmental budget, and develop policy.
  • Ability to collaborate with other university departments and offices.
  • Must have effective group dynamic and crisis intervention skills.
  • Must have knowledge of psychological assessment, theories of personality, abnormal psychology or psychopathology, legal issues in psychology, and learning theory and disabilities.
  • Must have knowledge of conflict resolution, negotiation, and crisis management.
  • Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and Ellucian Banner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public.
  • Ability to detect and correct grammatical and spelling errors in written correspondence.
  • Ability to maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively supervise personnel and complete all associated personnel actions in a timely and accurate manner.

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned Doctorate in Counseling, Psychology, or related field from an accredited program.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of work experience with diverse populations.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in Tennessee.
