Job description

As an electrical engineer – MEU Power at Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor, you will be part of team making steel that goes into products that are visible all around you. The successful candidate will provide leadership in ensuring that work is performed safely to efficiently produce and deliver quality steel products to our customers. This role will report directly to the Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor MEU Power manager.
Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the safe maintenance and reliable operation of electrical distribution equipment at the Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor and the daily electrical support of the Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor power station
  • Requires equipment knowledge breadth and capability to interact and plan for multi-discipline trades including internal and external resources
  • Monitors Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for electrical distribution equipment and various motors and control systems in the MEU department
  • Communicates with central dispatch to address plant issues with the plant electrical distribution system
  • Interacts directly with contractors and other plant personnel daily in the engineering, planning, and executing electrical (high, medium, and low voltage) tasks around the plant
  • Acquires required permits to complete scope of work
  • Acquires required drawings and technical information
  • Writes and utilizes standard procedure documents
  • Writes work orders to identify needed maintenance repairs
  • Writes requisitions to order tools, parts, needed supplies, and work requiring contracting out
  • Maintains EDM print database for specific department by means of print creation and/or revision
  • Ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards
  • Develops Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
  • Assists with locking out equipment for maintenance repairs, and planned repair outages
  • Coaches employees in safety and good housekeeping practices
  • Performs area Layered Safety Audits and Hazard Assessments
  • Schedules hourly personnel, ensures that the turns are adequately staffed, and coordinates overtime as required by workload
  • Coordinates training of MTE personnel

Minimum Requirements

  • 3 years’ experience within a heavy industrial production related field
  • Experience working in an electrical distribution or related electrical field
  • Associate degree – technical school or other relevant field or, for the exceptional candidate, a high school diploma with significant experience
  • Proficiency in computer desktop software programs such as Microsoft Office
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written)
  • Excellent team building, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to effectively work in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to effectively work with bargaining unit electrical workforce
  • Ability to effectively work with contractors to complete work as required

Preferred Requirements

  • 5+ years experience within an electrical distribution or related electrical field
  • Bachelor’s degree – Electrical Engineering
  • Excellent PC skills including Microsoft Office products
  • Experience in reading and updating electrical drawings and schematics
  • Experience working with medium and high voltage electrical systems
  • Experience working with electrical system protective relay equipment
  • Self motivated with minimal direction required for day-to-day operations
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to facilitate in group settings
  • Good planning skills, well organized, self motivated.
  • Successful track record working with a represented workforce in a heavy industrial setting
  • Knowledge of safety and health polices including key components of the OSHA regulations
