Sr. Database Administrator

JOB SUMMARY:

This position will be responsible for database design, development, implementation, backup, & security for a variety of research projects in the Department of Biostatistics. The position may work alone on database projects or may lead teams. Databases range in complexity from relatively simple to highly complex. Specific responsibilities are detailed below.

Database design, development, & implementation

  • Models data to design database structure in light of all project requirements (e.g., data entry workflows, data monitoring need, study endpoints & statistical analysis plan)
  • Chooses database platform best-suited to support data model, with a preference toward REDCap implementations (which may require creative use of REDCap features to simulate a relational database, or otherwise leverage REDCap features in a creative way to fulfill project requirements) or cloud-based implementations (MS Azure, AWS, GCP)
  • Documents data structure, database design specifications, and feedback from user-acceptance testing (UAT)
  • Implements database per data structure & platform determinations; configures & tests database function

Database security

  • Identifies security vulnerabilities & develops / deploys safeguards, with specific attention to server security, database connections, and database access controls
  • Ensures confidentiality and security of study participant data stored in research databases, in light of HIPAA Privacy Rule and 21CFR11

Database backup & recovery

  • Develops and implements backup & recovery plan for all research databases
  • Recovers and restores databases in the event of damage or loss of data

Server installation, configuration, and upgrade

  • Installs software & configures servers to support database applications
  • Uses Docker or other containerizing software to ensure identical development & production environments for each database application
  • Upgrades server software as needed to address performance issues or security vulnerabilities

Additional Information:

This is a full-time exempt staff position.

Salary is dependent upon education and experience.
