Description:

Under minimal supervision, applies advanced technical skills and seasoned judgment to independently and competently provide a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services in a SEARHC laboratory. Depending on location shift work and night and weekend call may be required to provide 24 hour laboratory coverage. Perform CLIA defined waived, moderate, and high complexity testing. Works with infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.

Accountabilities

1. Performs full range of simple-to-complex sample testing and laboratory services. Follows policies and procedures and is competent to perform testing in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology and infectious disease safety. Performs patient specimen testing. Ensures sample suitability. Demonstrates proficiency in newborn/infant heel-sticks; child and adult finger-sticks; newborn, infant, child and adult venipuncture.

2. Evaluates, judges and interprets test results and ensures accuracy before release of test results. Accepts and processes samples for on-site testing or forwards to contracted reference laboratories. Identifies and resolves inconsistencies in patient results. Maintains laboratory equipment and instruments. Ensures quality control and functionality of instruments. Prepares lab for inspection from regulatory bodies.

3. Uses good customer service practices to answers questions from patient, providers, and others regarding test processes, patient results, or sample collection techniques. Assists in training of new employees and laboratory students. Participates in continuing education programs. Proficient use of LIS and other computer programs.

4. Monitors, maintains, orders and stocks laboratory supplies.

5. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Position Complexities

The work typically involves full responsibility for all technical aspects of the laboratory and includes a wide variety of duties involving diverse and complex technical problems and considerations, i.e. procuring compatible, lifesaving units of blood for a patient with antibodies. MLT makes decisions that directly or indirectly affect the quality of patient care and can be “life or death” decisions or problems with the assistance of the MLS or Lab Manager. Assists with training of new employees during the orientation period and as directed. Assists the laboratory manager with Process Improvement activities associated with their departments as directed. Understands and assists the Laboratory Manager with implementing CAP standards and CLIA regulations in their department of responsibility. Coordinates inventory levels with laboratory manager to maintain proper supply levels. Follows policy and procedures established by the Laboratory Medical Director and the Lab Manager.

This position is a covered position in accordance with the Indian Child Protection Act (ICPA). The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Requires the ability to stand or walk for varied periods of time.
  • May occasionally be exposed to hazardous working environment with hazardous chemicals and infectious disease.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 45 pounds.
  • SEARHC is not a latex free environment. Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
  • Routine duties involve primarily laboratory-related conditions.
  • Daily functions may include incidental exposure to chemical and biological hazards, patient contact, needles/syringes, waste handling, moving mechanical parts, and computer use.
  • Most functions require use of protective gear such as gloves and fluid resistant coats.

Position Qualifications

Education:

· An Associate’s degree in Medical Technology or related field.

Experience:

· One year clinical laboratory experience.

Certification:

· Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) OR Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA) OR equivalent certification (as determined by a national credential certification agency).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Protocols and practices in infectious disease control.
  • Instrument maintenance and ability to ensure quality and functionality of instruments.
  • Regulatory requirements and ability to follow laboratory procedures.

Skills in:

  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing LIS and a variety of software applications.

Ability to:

  • Perform a full range of simple-to-complex sample testing and laboratory services in the areas of microbiology, and transfusion medicine.
  • Perform newborn/infant heel-sticks; child and adult finger-sticks; newborn, infant, child and adult venipuncture.
  • Interpret test results and ensures accuracy with limited supervision and identifies and resolves inconsistencies.
  • Communicate in oral and written format and provide customer service to those using lab services.
  • Assist management in the monitoring, maintaining, and ordering of laboratory supplies.
