Summary:
Performs clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance and instrument maintenance.

1.Performs routine and special laboratory tests. Recognizes invalid test results and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from supervisor.

2.Calls critical test results to providers or nurses immediately and maintains panic value log according to established criteria.

3.Maintains the abnormal results log according to protocol.

4.Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates own work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.5.Runs quality control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate records.

5.Analyzes quality control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems.

6.Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to appropriate clinical personnel.8.Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting. Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules.

7.Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, problems and corrective actions taken.

8.Handles all aspects of laboratory proficiency testing as necessary for level of lab certification.

9.Recognizes, analyzes and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Provides assistance to laboratory coworkers in the resolution of similar problems.

10.Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to supervisor.

11.Assures assimilation of procedures and evaluates troubleshooting techniques. Documents the same by initialing department checklist.

12.Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area. Maintains records of work performed for workload and statistical reporting purposes. May be assigned responsibility for collation of tallies. Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory area.

13.Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the phlebotomy area.

14.Keeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily supplies.

15.Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.

16.Follows the CHRISTUS guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).

17.Maintains strict confidentiality.

18.Uses oral and written communication skills to effectively convey ideas in a clear, positive manner that is consistent with the CHRISTUS Mission.

19.Maintains established CHRISTUS policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

20.Implements job responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with the CHRISTUS Mission and Code of Ethics and supportive of CHRISTUS cultural diversity objectives.

21.Supports and adheres to CTC Service Guarantee.

22.Performs other related work as required.

Requirements:
Successful completion of a Medical Technology program that is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA), or equivalent training, education and experience.

Pediatric Phlebotomy experience preferred.

ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized Medical Technology certification. Must have documentation of training appropriate for the testing performed prior to analysis of any specimens.
