Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Ybor City Center for Rehabilitation & Healing – Tampa, FL


BASIC FUNCTION

To assist direct care staff with resident’s activities of daily living in accordance with the established procedures and as directed by the supervisor.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Make an occupied/unoccupied bed
  • Pass fresh ice water
  • Pass meal trays/open cartons & packets (independent residents only)
  • Check resident temperatures
  • Perform one person transfers
  • Transfer resident to wheelchair/bed using gait belt
  • Ambulate resident with gait belt
  • Oral care/denture care (alert residents only)
  • Provide a bed bath/perineal/catheter care
  • Change incontinent brief
  • Assist the resident with getting dressed
  • Assist with hearing aids
  • Assist resident to bathroom or to use a urinal (one person assist only)


EXPOSURE RISK

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is at high risk for exposure to blood and body fluids.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives administrative supervision from the Director of Nursing, the Assistant Director of Nursing or the Nursing Supervisor. May receive functional supervision from registered or practical nurses working on the unit.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Exercises functional supervision, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old
  • Certified Nursing Assistant certification


GENERAL PATIENT/RESIDENT CARE

  • Residents are identified prior to providing care, serving meals, and as necessary.
  • Resident is approached in a kind, gentle and friendly manner. Respect for the resident’s dignity and privacy is consistently provided. Confidentiality of all resident information is maintained.
  • All grievances and complaints made by the resident are reported to the staff/charge nurse.
  • Meal trays are distributed and picked up.
  • Bed pans, urinals, and emesis basins are distributed and removed as requested.
  • Resident call lights are promptly answered and appropriate responses to requests are provided.


ADHERENCE TO FACILITY PROCEDURES

1. Procedures are performed according to established method in the procedure manual.

2. Body substance precautions and other appropriate infection control practices are utilized with all activities.

3. Safety guidelines established by the facility (Le., proper restraint and side-rail use) are followed.

4. All accidents or incidents observed are reported on the shift that they occur.


COMMUNICATION

1. All changes in a resident’s condition are reported as soon as possible to the Charge/Staff Nurse.

2. Staff meetings are attended, if on duty. Minutes are read and initiated if not on duty.

3. Resident/unit problems are reported to the Charge Nurse.


PROFESSIONALISM

1. Decisions are made that reflect both knowledge and good judgment.

2. Awareness of own limitation is evident and assistance is sought when necessary.

3. Dress code is adhered to.

4. Committee meetings (if assigned) are attended. Reports related to the committee are given during staff meetings.

5. Responsibility is taken for own professional growth. Attend and participate in all scheduled training, educational and orientation classes, programs and activities including annual mandatory classes.

6. Follow work schedules and complete assigned tasks according to the established policies and procedures of the facility.

7. Notify the facility if you are going to be late or absent from work.

8. Organizational ability and time management is demonstrated.

9. Confidentiality of patient/resident is respected at all times (i.e., when answering telephone and/or speaking to co-workers).

10. Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel to ensure that the needs of the patients/residents are met and maintained.


HUMAN RELATIONS

1. A positive working relationship with patients/residents, visitors and facility staff is demonstrated.

2. Authority is acknowledged and response to the direction of supervisors is appropriate.

3. Time is spent with patients/residents rather than other personnel.

4. Co-workers are readily assisted as needed.


WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Works in the nursing service areas, patient/resident rooms, nurse’s station, etc.

2. Sits, bends, stands, lifts and moves intermittently throughout the work hours.

3. Subject to exposure to ‘infectious waste, diseases, conditions and blood and body fluids.

4. Subject to frequent interruptions.

5. Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.

6. Communicates with other nursing and department personnel.

7. Is involved with patients/residents, personnel, visitors, etc., throughout the working hours.


SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

1. Must be able to relate information concerning a patient’s/resident’s condition.

2, Must be willing to work effectively with professional and non-professional personnel,


PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
(With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices)

1. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.

2. Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.

3. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.

4. Must be able to see and hear, or use prosthetic devices to enable them to use these senses adequately, to ensure that the requirements of the position are met.

5. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of 50 pounds.

6. Must be able to assist with the evacuation of patients/residents.

7. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.

8. Must be able to work with and relate to the ill, disabled, elderly, or emotionally upset patients/residents.

9. Must be able to work effectively with patients/residents, personnel and support agencies.
