Environmental Management Engineer III – County of Hawaii – Hilo, HI

Performs moderately difficult professional engineering work in the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and/or operation of solid waste facilities, sewers, wastewater pump stations, wastewater treatment facilities, etc.; plans, researches, prepares, and reviews designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and engineering reports; and performs other duties as required.

One (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Environmental Management’s Wastewater Division in Hilo.

The eligible list may be used for other Environmental Management Engineer III permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Due to collective bargaining agreement salary increases, the salary information provided will be implemented on November 16, 2020.

Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • graduation from an accredited college or university with baccalaureate degree in civil, chemical, mechanical, or environmental engineering (attach a copy of your official college transcript to your application), and
  • two (2) years of professional engineering work experience that involved designing plans and specifications and/or managing construction projects involving solid waste or wastewater facilities or operations, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i Driver License (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at the time of filing. You will be required to submit your valid driver license at the time of hire.

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant’s training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Note: In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai’i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency. Knowledge of: Civil and hydraulic engineering principles and practices, methods and techniques in used in solid waste and wastewater operations, knowledge of applicable law and regulations applicable to solid waste and wastewater operations, and engineering report writing.

Ability to: Perform environmental engineering work, perform engineering design work, supervise construction and inspection activities, prepare engineering and inspection reports, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, consultants, other governmental agencies, County employees, and the public.
