The Position

The Digital Health Technologies (DHT) group at Roche/Genentech is part of the R&D Personalized Healthcare (PHC) Center of Excellence building the next generation digital health platform, tools, products, and solutions for the future of medicine. We are building an intelligent, regulatory compliant, highly scalable and secure software platform with regulatory, quality, and privacy requirements. We are building clinically validated, regulatory grade digital health products and solutions which include Software as a Medical Device (SaMDs), algorithms, and Digital Therapeutics. Our digital products are built with our intelligent platform and services to provide real-time advanced analysis of multi-modal data which generate actionable insights for our patients and care providers. Our products and solutions are helping bring improvements to the R&D of disease understanding, higher quality of life, and improved health outcomes.

DHT partners across the company with other Digital Health groups to advance digital health solutions which include hardware, software, applications, tools, and platforms to enable development of our therapies as well as more personalized care of patients across a range of therapeutic areas. Our primary focus is on the validation, scaling, and productization of digital health products, solutions, platform and services; inclusive of late-stage development of novel digital biomarkers and endpoints, as well as the design, conduct, and analysis of analytical validation, clinical validation, and clinical utility studies to meet clinical and regulatory requirements, as appropriate.

The Opportunity:
We are looking for an experienced technology product development and engineering leader who wants to deliver the next generation intelligent digital health platform, products, services, and solutions across therapeutic areas such as Neuroscience, Ophthalmology, and Oncology. As the Global Head of Architecture and Engineering for Digital Health Technologies (DHT) you will be a strategic and key leader part of the DHT leadership team working close to collaborate internally across partner organizations across the Roche group and externally across strategic scientific and technology partners. You will lead the Architecture and Engineering group with all efforts around our intelligent digital health platform built from the ground up on our Big Data and AI stack using cutting edge technologies. Our platform allows rapid development of clinically validated, regulatory grade applications and solutions leveraging our advanced optimized platform technology stack, AI Engine, Core SDK, Kernel, and Tools.

Our goal is to improve access, safety and efficacy of treatment by building evidence-based, clinically-validated digital health products on our advanced intelligent platform.

We are looking for someone who is obsessed with engineering execution with focus on customer quality and a passion for improving patient care and outcomes.

What You’ll Do:
You will help define, architect and deliver our advanced technology stack and digital health platform along with its components, features, and capabilities that improve the well-being of millions of patients. You will provide direction, growth, and leadership to the existing high performing architecture and engineering group. You will partner with both our Chief Architect and Global Head of Platform and AI Product Management to drive the overall strategy, vision, and roadmap of our technology and platform with a high degree of ownership over critical components, features, and the patient experiences. This role is inherently cross-functional where you will drive trade-off analysis involved in the various product concepts being evaluated. Proposing, incorporating, and integrating capabilities fit-for-purpose into our platform. You will also work closely with our Product Managers, Measurement Scientists, and Compliance Leads to help identify, translate the user requirements into platform requirements across our product portfolios.

To be successful, you will leverage cross-functional leadership with other groups across Roche to define and execute the strategic platform direction of Digital Health, transforming drug development and patient care.

You are highly technical, able to work effectively in a matrix organization, and adept at synthesizing a variety of information including varying research, architectures, technologies, and solutions. Building for scale, reliability, efficiency, flexibility, speed, safety, and compliance while leveraging applicable cutting-edge technologies, methods, and approaches are a priority.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical vision, strategy, and execution to lead Architecture and Engineering group on development and delivery of platform and products.
  • Develop a deep knowledge of our customers & collaborate with stakeholders to gather business and functional platform requirements and translate requirements into technical specifications and architectures that are robust, scalable and supportable
  • Perform architecture feasibility analysis and make recommendations to senior leadership regarding product architecture options
  • Develop and document architecture specifications that serve as the reference for engineering and execution
  • Serve as technical lead throughout the full product execution life cycle, end-to-end, from scoping, planning, conception, design, implementation and testing, to documentation, delivery and maintenance
  • Design and lead multi-year technical roadmaps and take full responsibility for planning, overall execution and success of the long-term product roadmap of our intelligent digital health platform and its components and features (Platform, Kernel, AI Engine, Core SDK and Tools).
  • Recruit, develop and grow top technical talent through effective mentoring, coaching, succession planning and retention strategies for key talent in a highly competitive economic environment.
  • Further the culture of product innovation and excellence, characterized as highly collaborative, execution-focused, customer-centric and high velocity
  • Provide clear and consistent leadership, management, and mentoring
  • Advance DHT product development methodology, policies and governance frameworks to improve and enhance the user experience, product and feature prioritization, release predictability, quality, and velocity to support research and development of our molecules and enable personalized patient care and access, in collaboration with the therapeutic area product teams and other Digital Health groups within Roche.
  • Be an evangelist for our work in DHT not only within the broader Roche/Genentech organization, but externally through publication and public speaking at industry events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Passionate about using technology and data-driven approaches to help improve the lives and health of our patients!
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Eng neering or related field
  • 10+ years as a senior engineering leader with experience leading teams and delivering complex, commercially successful, mission-critical products and developer platforms/tools to customers
  • Experience in bringing cloud, enterprise, mobile, and AI based products deployed in production at scale which use machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and/or natural language processing
  • Effective at building personal trust and enthusiasm across the broader leadership organization
  • Deep understanding of cloud technologies, AI technologies (Machine Learning, Deep Learning, NLP, etc.), enterprise software and services, API integration, mobile (iOS and Android) and consumer applications, wearable and IoT device development and integration, and UX (Mobile, Device, and Dashboards)
  • Skilled in holding people (including yourself!) accountable, establishing high standards of excellence, and motivating people to perform their best work
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and influence skills; able to manage ambiguity and drive outcomes in complex organizational contexts
  • Able to write clear and concise documentation, excellent written and spoken communication with superb presentation skills
  • Able to drive and continuously re-enforce the PHC DHT culture, operating principles, and product development practices
  • A great coach and mentor
  • Ability to travel internationally 25%

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field preferred
  • Experience with Wearable and IoT device development
  • Experience with developing Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality hardware/software solutions
  • Experience with medical devices and/or Software as a Medical Device
  • Familiarity with Healthcare Systems and/or Pharma Industry, including Knowledge of Drug Discovery process flow, Clinical Trial Systems
  • Experience working with Quality Management Systems
