Purpose:

The Medical Specialist is responsible for performing donor medical qualifications, determining donor suitability and handling donor reactions while operating within the scope of EU Guidance on Good Manufacturing Practice and FDA cGMP 21CFR.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the evaluation of donor suitability for plasma donation and educating donors and staff on donor suitability and medical-related questions.
  • Reviews and posts SPE test results and perform donor suitability evaluation every 4 months.
  • Assists management in reviewing viral marker atypical test results as needed.
  • Inform donors of positive viral marker testing results (i.e. Hep-B, Hep-C, HIV, Syphilis, etc.).
  • Provide treatment to donors who experience adverse reactions to the plasma donation procedure (i.e. Hypotensive Reaction, Citrate Reaction, Local Injury, Allergic Reaction, etc.)
  • Manages employee Hepatitis B Vaccine administration and other specialty immunization programs.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • EMT-A, Paramedic, LPN/LVN or RN license, as allowed by state in work location (required)
  • Current CPR certification or Basic Life Support (required)
  • Must be comfortable with repetitive duties performed in a clinical work environment and within standard operating procedures (required).
  • Computer literacy in Electronic Medical Records (EMR Records) or similar systems and Microsoft Office applications (required)
  • 1 year of experience as a licensed professional in a healthcare environment (preferred) with consistent work history.
  • Plasma center or blood bank industry experience (preferred).

Physical and Mental Working Conditions:

  • Frequently performs work while walking or standing.
  • Frequently exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Required to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule (weekends, evenings, holidays) to meet production needs.
  • Occasionally required to discuss sensitive health information with donors.
