Position Description: Therapeutic Consultant

Summary : Responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with organizations within the community that lead to referrals, provide support to individuals and their families by coordinating and providing services, utilizing principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and other appropriate modalities within the behaviorist’s scope of practice, conduct function analyses & assessment, behavior acquisition & reduction procedures, and support the focus person & their stakeholders/team members in order to increase adaptive life skills. Behavior Consultants will adhere to LEAF policies while providing person-centered care within the DMAS & DBHDS guidelines to maintain their contract.

Essential components of this role are listed below but subject to change at the discretion of LEAF Behavior Support LLC. This position description describes essential functions but does not provide an exhaustive list of duties that may be assigned. Specific duties and responsibilities will vary depending upon classification and role.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct care in 1:1 and team-based settings utilizing a combinations of intensive teaching and natural environment training arrangements.
  • Conduct face to face/telehealth intakes, assessments and routine follow ups with individuals and family members.
  • Support the development of the Individual Service Plan (ISP) during annual meetings.
  • Recording data, evaluate and document individual progress toward service plan goals and objectives.
  • Directly supervise, monitor, model, and train staff implementing identified behavior goals/interventions.
  • Provide resources for emergency crisis support.
  • Develop parent and caregiver training that aligns with the focus person’s plan of care and behavior reduction protocols, train family members as applicable on training techniques and skills.
  • Follow and assign the appropriate skill acquisition and behavior reduction protocols.
  • Collect, record, and summarize data on observable behavior from the focus person.
  • Ensures compliance with state licensing regulations and the Dept. of Medical Assistance Services by performing quality assurance checks on submitted documentation.
  • Assist in preparing materials needed to support the focus person as it pertains to the plan of care.
  • Ensures the enforcement of Human Rights, Rules, and Regulations and report any known violation.
  • Collaborate with team members including focus person, parents, and caregivers, outside professionals and other important people.
  • Acts as a liaison between individuals served, community organizations and other community resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain and acquire technical knowledge by attending trainings when made available.

Billable Activities that allowed, are as follows:

a. Interviewing the individual, family members, caregivers, and relevant others to identify issues to be addressed and desired outcomes of consultation;

b. Observing the individual in daily activities and natural environments and observing and assessing the current interventions, support strategies, or assistive devices being used with the individual;

c. Assessing the individual’s need for an assistive device for a modification or adjustment of an assistive device, or both, in the environment or service, including reviewing documentation and evaluating the efficacy of assistive devices and interventions identified in the therapeutic consultation plan;

d. Developing data collection mechanisms and collecting baseline data as appropriate for the type of consultation service provided;

e. Designing a written therapeutic consultation plan or a behavioral support plan detailing the interventions, environmental adaptations, and support strategies to address the identified issues and desired outcomes, including recommendations related to specific devices, technology, or adaptation of other training programs or activities. The plan may recommend training relevant persons to better support the individual simply by observing the individual’s environment, daily routines, and personal interactions;

f. Demonstrating (i) specialized, therapeutic interventions; (ii) individualized supports; or (iii) assistive devices;

g. Training family/caregivers and other relevant persons to assist the individual in using an assistive device; to implement specialized, therapeutic interventions; or to adjust currently utilized support techniques;

h. Intervening directly, by behavioral consultants, with the individual and demonstrating to family/caregivers or staff such interventions. Such intervention modalities shall relate to the individual’s identified behavioral needs as detailed in established specific goals and procedures set out in the ISP; and

i. Consulting related to person centered therapeutic outcomes, in person, over the phone, or via video feed consistent with in accordance with the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Qualifications (Identify which role applies):

  • Behavior- Behavior consultation shall only be provided by (i) a licensed behavior analyst or a licensed assistant behavior analyst or (ii) a positive behavior supports facilitator endorsed by a recognized positive behavior supports organization or who meets the criteria for psychology consultation.
  • Psychology- Psychology consultation shall only be provided by the following individuals licensed in the Commonwealth of

Virginia: (i) a psychologist, (ii) a licensed professional counselor, (iii) a licensed clinical social worker, (iv) a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist, or (v) a psychiatrist.

  • Speech-Speech consultation shall only be provided by a speech-language pathologist who is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Occupation Therapy- Occupational therapy consultation shall only be provided by an occupational therapist who is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Physical Therapy-Physical therapy consultation shall only be provided by a physical therapist who is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Therapeutic Recreation-Therapeutic recreation consultation shall only be provided by a therapeutic recreation specialist who is certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
  • Rehabilitation-Rehabilitation consultation shall only be provided by a rehabilitation engineer or certified rehabilitation specialist.

Must clear criminal history and sex offender background check.

Minimum three verified character and employment references.

Experience: Therapeutic Consultants need at least a bachelor’s degree to qualify for employment/contract. A bachelor’s degree in psychology, behavioral science or a related field provides the foundation for a career in behavior consulting. Therapeutic Consultants must be licensed or certified in Virginia and other states/territories where LEAF provides services. Upon accepting a contract, LEAF will verify proper licensure requirements for the state and/or territory.

Related Training

Responsible for completing and maintain all required certifications and trainings once employed/contracted including, but not limited to: CPR, Person Centered Thinking, Non-Violent Crisis Management (CPI), Human Rights, Positive Behavior

Support, and other organizational in-services and trainings as recommended by Employment/Contract Supervisor.
