DEPUTY CORONER – County of Greenville – Greenville, SC

Under general supervision, assists the Coroner in the performance of duties for the Coroner’s Office in accordance with the laws of South Carolina. Reports to the Senior Deputy Coroners. Exercises good customer service techniques, such as listening, effective communications and problem solving. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals under stressful conditions; ability to follow lawful orders and directive so supervisor; responsible for the determination of death in violent and unusual situations; investigates death scenes to determine if foul play was involved; notifies victim’s family members of death and maintains communication with families through and to the conclusion of the investigation. Secures personal effects of the deceased and handles the release to the proper next-of-kin or Personal Representative appointed by Probate Court. Responsible for preparing releases to the news media as assigned by the Coroner. Completes death certificates and other documents as required; appears as a court witness when necessary; act as a liaison between medical personnel and family members of the victim; obtain necessary body samples as needed for analysis; ensures that the death scene is uncontaminated; assist EMS and body transport personnel in removal of bodies from any types of scene to include motor vehicle accidents; responsible for the collection and preservation of evidence when necessary. Maintains rapport with law enforcement agencies, emergency medical personnel, hospitals, medical doctors and others; ability to work in a team environment. High school graduate or higher with extensive experience in law enforcement, legal death investigation, or related medical field, or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s License. Minimum age 21. Must be able to pass a background check, physical, psychological evaluation and drug screening as required. Must successfully qualify with firearms. Must have and maintain a clean criminal history; must be a citizen of the United States. Must be a resident of Greenville County, South Carolina or a resident of Greenville County, South Carolina by the time of employment; must be NCIC certified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division; must be American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators certified; must be Class 3 Law Enforcement Officer certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy; all above certifications must be completed as soon as made available and within two years of employment.
