Overview:

Equipment Operator position consists of general heavy equipment operation for construction. Equipment operators can operate a variety of equipment, used in installation/repair/maintenance activities associated with underground construction or utilities, in a safe and effective manner. This position helps coordinate work alongside the foreman and/or supervisor to ensure production is being met and an employee in this position should have a basic knowledge and understanding of utility systems, prints, job skills.


Pay Range:
The hourly pay for the Construction Operator (Trench/Plow) position is $20.00 / hour.


Responsibilities:

  • Safely operates equipment on job site which may include, but not limited to the following: Backhoe / Excavator, Skid Steer, Tractor Trailer (Moving Equipment / Haul Water), Vacuum Truck/Trailer

  • Restores and/or landscapes disturbed areas of the job site

  • Responsible for the site set-up and clean-up

  • Load and unload tools, materials and equipment on truck

  • Will be involved in new site Job Safety Analysis – JSA prior to starting construction

  • Setting up safety perimeter using signage, cones and safety barriers and at times flagging traffic

  • May be required to work overtime; after hours; on weekends, for emergencies or be on-call as work is needed to ensure work is completed

  • Ability to follow instructions


Qualifications:

Experience Requirements:

  • Commercial Driver’s License, required
  • 6-12 months of work-related experience pertaining to utility construction, telecommunications or laborer related work
  • Must be experienced with backhoe and understand its capabilities and limitations

  • Basic ability to use small tools/hand tools
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, safety rules and operating instructions

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check

  • Must be able to proficiently use locators to safely identify utilities

  • Must have good troubleshooting and problem solving skills

  • Must be very safety conscientious

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to make common sense understanding to carry out instructions that are provided in written, oral or drawing. Ability to deal with and understand problems involving different variables in many varied situations involving employees, customers and vendors.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts (measurements in terms of distance, proportions, percentages and area. Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, understand and interpret documents such as safety rules and requirements, machine manuals of operation and process procedures. Ability to write information including reports. Ability to speak effectively to customers, coworkers and vendors.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license to perform the functions of this position.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and company drug screening.
  • Must be able to attend and pass all company required training as needed.
  • May be required to work over-time; after hours; on weekends or be on-call as work is needed to ensure work is completed.
  • May include working nights and holidays as needed.
  • May be required to travel in state or overnight as necessary to meet business needs.
  • Regular and timely attendance is an essential function of this position.
