HOURS: 40 hours per week
COMPENSATION: $13.00 – $15.00 per hour (based on experience), plus a $500 signing bonus

SUMMARY: The Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing medical evaluations, treatment, and follow-ups to all HSP animals under the direction of the Medical Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Execute medical care to all animal patients under the supervision of the Medical Manager and Shelter Veterinarian.
  • Handle all animals using the least restraint possible and maintain a low-stress interaction between staff and animals.
  • Assess and process animals as potential adoption candidates according to established procedures, including but not limited to administering tests, vaccinations, physical exams, and inserting microchips.
  • Perform various diagnostics tests, including fecal analysis, skin/ear cytology, urinalysis, etc.
  • Medicate and treat Society animals according to current protocols.
  • Maintain current and accurate animal records into PetPoint, the shelter software system.
  • Assist in surgeries as directed by the Medical Manager and Shelter Veterinarian.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary working environment (i.e., after surgical procedures, spills, pet accidents, potential contamination, etc.).
  • Report concerns about animal behavior to the Behavior Technician and/or Director of Operations.
  • Perform daily inventory of animals in the medical building, medical dog kennels and isolation areas.
  • Follow and promote all HSP policies and philosophies in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and the public on and off site.
  • Handle any monetary transactions accurately and securely.
  • Participate in staff and department meetings and training opportunities.
  • Be prepared to assist in any disaster affecting HSP.
  • Honor confidentiality of shelter business.
  • Stay up to date with all procedure and policy changes.
  • Follow and promote to the public all HSP policies and philosophies.
  • Handle animals humanely and safely at all times.
  • Demonstrate a high quality of work standards and work ethics.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Medical Manager, Shelter Veterinarian, and Director of Operations.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED), required.
  • Veterinary Technician Certification (Or equivalent training/experience), preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures, including but not limited to blood draw, vaccination, pre- and post-operative care, and wellness checks, required.
  • Familiarity with PetPoint Animal Management Software a plus.
  • Experience with medical needs of companion animals a plus.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Comfort handling all companion animals, including but not limited to dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, rodents, and birds.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, effectively with staff, volunteers, and HSP clients.
  • Ability to make sound behavioral decisions that support HSP’s mission and are in the best interest of every animal.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Excel and Word.
  • Multitasking and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Light to moderate physical activity performing non-strenuous activities of an administrative nature to include:

  • Sitting, standing, and/or walking for an extended period of time.
  • Lifting 40 lbs. or more.
  • Working outdoors in all forms of weather, including heat, cold, humidity, sun, or rain.
  • Working in a well-lighted, heated, and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
  • Using manual dexterity sufficient to handle/reach items and work with hands and fingers to clean, pack and ship phones.
  • Using close/distant/peripheral and depth perception.
