WORK PROGRAM/TRANSPORT AIDE

JOB SUMMARY:

Conducts comprehensive vocational services and assists with rehabilitation therapy designed to advance the vocational rehabilitation of psychiatric patients in an acute psychiatric health care facility. Is also responsible for patient transports outside and inside the facility as needed or requested. Reports to the Director of Activities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

Work Program:

  • Supervises patients in the work program. Manages hours of work, job duties assigned and time-keeping records.
  • Completes meaningful evaluations of patient participation and overall progress as it relates to the job/duties.
  • Works directly with the patients, evaluating patient’s progress, interest levels, attitude, and behaviors; documents as required or requested.
  • Communicates with the patients on their level, understanding the abilities and special needs of each specific patient/group.
  • Seeks solutions to any complaints regarding the program.
  • Devotes time to interacting with the patients and staying the duration of the work program schedule.
  • Maintains an awareness of patient’s needs and individual goals.
  • Listens attentively to any patient complaints and works in a positive manner to help alleviate problems. Assists in limit setting with patients in a firm but kind manner, treating all individuals with respect and kindness.

Transport:

  • Maintains a constant awareness and supervision of patients during transport duties. Alert and aware of potential safety problems at all times. Alleviates any safety issue discovered by self, if appropriate, or by notifying appropriate persons for assistance.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Serves as a positive role model for patients and peers at all times.
  • Initiates patient and employee incident reports as necessary.
  • Must be on approved drivers list to drive company vehicles.
  • Follows transportation policies and procedures.

    • Meets with appropriate administrative personnel daily for a list of appointments for that day.
    • Communicate with nursing on patients behaviors etc. before leaving the hospital.
    • All paper work is gathered before leaving the hospital.
    • Ensure adequate staffing ratios for patient level is met.
    • Verifies vehicle files by to include: copies of vehicle registration, insurance information, mileage log and accident/damage reports
    • Coordinates all transport routes to ensure safe, efficient, and quality services for patient(s).
    • Provides a verbal report/briefing when returning to the hospital after all outings to the nurse and supervisor.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Is expected to take general daily direction from the Work Program Coordinator.
  • Keeps aware and helps enforce hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Follow all infection control policies.
  • Assists in orientation of new employees.
  • Meet all staff development requirements


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience working with people in an activity, supportive, or service capacity.


Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret instructions, documents and follow procedures.

Ability to write routine reports and speak effectively with patients and their families, employees, and public.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables as needed. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration:

Valid West Virginia driver’s license.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work flexible hours, ability to work with children, adolescents or adults experiencing mental health disturbances or dual diagnoses. Self-motivating – does not need to be reminded of specific or general duties by peers or supervisor. Works well and cooperates with staff in other departments. Exercises good judgment and sets positive examples.

The employee must occasionally lift or assist a patient and be able to move up to 100 pounds. Incumbent will be expected to participate as necessary in the physical restraint of patients, have the ability to respond to rapidly escalating patient situations, and adapt to the many varied resultant physical posturing as a result of such circumstances after Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
