Sonographer – St. John’s Health – Jackson, WY

JOB SUMMARY

Produce and record high quality sonographic images in the specialty areas of OB/GYN, abdomen, abdominal doppler, color-flow imaging, small parts, biopsy, aspiration guidance, vascular and cardiac in accordance with departmental protocols. Performs all procedures which are offered by the department following exam protocols on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Provides direct patient care that ensures quality, efficiency and well-being of each patient. Collaborates with members of the health care team to promote total patient care, demonstrating commitment to the mission, vision and values of St. John’s Medical Center. Delivers services according to the scope of service for Diagnostic Imaging. Adheres to and practices the St. John’s Corporate Compliance Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Consistently demonstrates competence in performing all ultrasound examinations offered by the department. This includes OB/GYN, abdomen, abdominal doppler, color-flow imaging, small parts, biopsy & aspiration guidance, nuchal translucency, vascular and cardiac imaging. Demonstrates skill and knowledge in the use of all standard ultrasound equipment. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of cross-sectional and sagittal anatomy.
  • Obtains and examines order requisition to ensure an adequate indication for procedure is documented and correlates with the ultrasound exam to be performed. Regularly consults with others as necessary to verify appropriate procedure to be completed. Thoroughly explains the procedure in an empathetic and caring way to alleviate patient anxiety. Assure patient’s questions are answered prior to beginning exam.
  • Addresses patient care compliant with DNV standards; Demonstrates an awareness of radiation safety procedures for self and others. Prepares examination for interpretation by the Radiologist or Cardiologist to include exam QA, scanning appropriate documents, retrieving prior studies and sending to PACS or Ultralinq. Charges exam, supplies and medications accurately at the time of use.
  • Organizes and prioritizes care of multiple patients with varying level of acuity in a timely and efficient manner. Demonstrates the ability to perform work in an accurate and timely manner in periods of crisis and emergency situations. Transports patients safely to and from the Diagnostic Imaging department. Properly performs hand-off communications when a patient has left or returned to the unit. Reports any changes in a patient’s condition or behavior to the appropriate physician or nursing personnel.
  • Conveys a strong sense of advocacy and support for staff and co-workers. Assists, teaches, and answers questions for colleagues. Presents self as a resource to co-workers and organization. Mentors new staff. Regularly assists in other areas of the department as needed. Uses time for departmental advantage.
  • Maintains, develops, and updates Sonographer skills. Self evaluates professional knowledge and actively seeks out educational opportunities for development.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Work Experience

Required: Ultrasound experience required. Excellent interpersonal, customer service and phone etiquette skills

Preferred: 2 years working as a Sonographer in a hospital setting. Breast Ultrasound, OB, ABD, Vascular and or Adult echocardiography credentials with associated experience. Advanced Sonographer with experience in diagnostic ultrasound or cardiac ultrasound.

Required Licenses

Registered with the ARDMS. BLS certification required.

FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS

Working Conditions

Radiation exposure, hospital environment, on-call rotation. Must be on-site at the SJH campus or other facilities to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.

Physical Requirements

80% of shift standing and walking. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to lift 10 pounds over head. Intermittent sitting, reaching, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling and computer use.
