Controller – Collaborative for Children – Houston, TX

THE POSITION:

Our Chief Financial Officer seeks an exceptional candidate to provide management oversight of all accounting and financial statement reporting activities, including budget tracking, analysis and reporting on agency program operations. Individual in Controller position will ensure appropriate processes and procedures are effective and responsive to support program implementation, as well as collaborating across the agency to educate all staff levels related to finance and accounting procedures and to explore how the finance function can more effectively support program operations and general administration

When you join the team, some of the essential work and responsibilities you will manage and handle will include:

Accounting Oversite and Execution

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain internal control compliance and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures
  • Coordinate and provide financial related materials for all audit activity
  • Consistently analyze accounting data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; monitor accounting group progress and operational changes, and keep CFO abreast of CC’s accounting activity and potential issues
  • Review and analyze financial statements, comparing actual results to the budget with a focus to identify and explain variances, and provide recommendations for appropriate responsive actions to variances
  • Support the CFO in engaging the Board Finance and Audit Committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants
  • Manage program cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program senior leadership and CFO; continuously collaborate with program management to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations

Program Operations Analysis

  • Provide assistance and consulting support to Workforce Solutions Program managers and staff and the Chief Programs Officer for accounting, cost management and budgetary matters relating to program operations
  • Design AccuFund system generated reports and Excel worksheets to capture and track multiple complex budgets by program, cost center, funder and reporting period
  • Assist with budget and monthly actual expenditure data input uploads into AccuFund
  • Develop expenditure tracking tools to help program managers expend funds in compliance with program requirements and accurately report grant expenditures
  • Develop monthly updates to contract expenditure projections to efficiently and effectively manage the expenditure process to comply with program spending authorizations
  • Support program managers in their use of the cost management and monitoring AccuFund analytical tools and reports
  • Provide analytical support and training to program managers to increase their capabilities to understand and effectively utilize the cost management information

Leadership and Management

  • Leverage strengths of the current accounting group, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual, departmental, and organizational goals
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications among finance staff and cross-functionally across the agency; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment

THE MUST HAVES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; advanced Accounting degree preferred

  • 10+ years of senior financial management experience with at least 7 years managing an Accounting Department

  • Mastery of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal controls and financial reporting
  • A strong understanding of finance and accounting practices relating to donor and grants management preferred
  • Demonstrated annual budget and audit preparation experience
  • Experience in determining project feasibility and costing of services preferred
  • Proficiency in clearly communicating information about finances and accounting issues to non-accountants and individuals with varying levels of financial expertise
  • Significant experience with allocations of shared costs preferred
  • Strong quantitative analysis capabilities, with the ability to read, analyze, interpret and explain complex financial data
  • Familiarity with specialized non-profit industry accounting practices, reporting requirements and procedures preferred.
  • Possess strong financial acumen to produce and maintain accurate financial records and prepare clear and accurate reports for informational, auditing, and operational use
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and email/communications/scheduling software (Outlook).

  • Financial software experience; AccuFund financial software experience preferred
  • Flexibility to work occasional nights and/or weekends as Finance, Program or agency events necessitate
  • Reliable, personal transportation
  • Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Current vehicle insurance coverage

  • Compensation: This is an Exempt, Salaried, Full-Time position. Offer will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Paid bi-weekly.
