SUMMARY:

University Gastroenterology, a single specialty group practice with locations in Providence, Portsmouth and East Greenwich, Rhode Island is seeking an experienced Medical Secretary for our Portsmouth office.

This position is primarily responsible for facilitating provider with support to see and treat patients in a professional and organized fashio, by performing the following duties:

Job duties include:

  • scheduling appointments and procedures
  • confirming patient appointments
  • answer patient questions about procedures and preparation
  • obtaining prior authorizations for procedures
  • obtaining proper referrals for appointments
  • performing prior authorizations
  • answering phone calls and messages
  • working tasks in the EHR
  • laboratory and diagnostic testing orders
  • performs various other office duties as needed

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma / Certified Medical Secretary / Medical Terminology
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in the health care field with full knowledge of the front and back office. Medical Terminology / Electronic Medical Records experience required.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment.

  • Maintains clean, orderly work area

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Certified Medical Secretary, Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school preferred.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience with similar job functions in a healthcare setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Medical Terminology / Electronic Medical Records experience required

COMPUTER SKILLS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have previous EHR/EMR experience; Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook is preferred.

Medical Secretaries report directly to their Site Supervisor or Practice Manager, as well as the provider they support.
