Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1 year of verifiable experience training and/or working in the health care field performing any of the following examinations/screenings: Height/weight, temperature, and blood pressure
  • Reliable transportation and a valid Driver’s License, if out of state a Florida Driver’s License is required within 30 days of hire
  • current CPR ( Basic Life Support) Certification
  • Verifiable CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) or CMA/RMA (Certified/Registered Medical Assistant) Certification
  • Emergency Duty

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is a Health Support Technician (HST) position in the Basic School Health Program working under the supervision of a Senior Community Health Nurse and a Community Health Nursing Supervisor. Makes school visits and acts as liaison to the school staff and provides the services listed below. Ensures client records are secure and confidentiality is maintained. This position requires driving to various schools throughout Orange County. Reliable transportation and a valid Florida Driver’s License are required. Maintains travel log, school folders and daily calendar. Provides support as needed at outreach/awareness and incident response events within the community to include: mass immunization, emergency response activities, and community health engagements. Support may be required outside of normal business hours to accommodate community needs during evening and weekends hours.

Participates in screening programs such as vision and growth and development and participates in training of school personnel and volunteers to help in these screenings. Ensures all screening services are coded into HMS (Health Management System) to include FTTY’s (First Time This Year), rescreens, referrals, outcomes, incomplete referrals, and Opt-Outs

Vision Screenings.

Gathers all statistics. Places the initial screening in HMS under volunteer code. Performs rescreens and places in HMS as needed. For students with failed results, sends referral letters to parents advising of the need to seek further medical evaluation. Follow ups requires 3 attempts utilizing any combination of letter, phone call, or meeting. Tracks results of the referral and codes outcomes and incompletes in HMS.

Height/Weight/BMI (Body Mass Index)

Gathers all statistics. Calculates the BMI and presents results to the Senior Community Health Nurse for review, for determining the use of referral letters vs. notification letters and for tracking results of the referral and codes outcomes and incompletes in HMS.

Reviews students’ records for immunization and physical exam compliance with current laws and requirements. Communicates with school staff and parents as needed to update requirements. Participates in various immunization events. Ensures all record reviews and immunization follows up are coded in HMS. Utilizing knowledge of immunization requirements, may complete and sign immunization form 680.

Enters and certifies daily activity in EARS (Employee Activity Record). Accounts for time in People First. Confirms Emergency Response.

Attends all meetings and conferences as required. Maintains all required trainings and updates job-related education.

Travels and documents vicinity mileage.

Performs other related duties as required.

Miscellaneous

Provides orientation and support to new school health staff. May participate in health fairs and community events.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, INCLUDING UTILIZATION OF EQUIPMENT, REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:

  • Skills in using medical instruments or testing equipment.
  • Skill in taking blood pressure readings.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

  • Ability to interview patients and obtain complete medical history.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
