Pharmacy Technician II – Community Hospice & Palliative Care – Jacksonville, FL

Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician II position is responsible for assisting in the various activities of the pharmacy department, including those related to preparing and dispensing drugs. The Pharmacy Technician II functions in accordance with Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and guidelines as well as applicable state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtains and maintains appropriate knowledge and understanding of the care and services provided by Community Hospice. This knowledge includes the values, policies, and procedures of the Community Hospice Pharmacy and related clinical practice settings.
  • Follows established departmental rules, procedures, policies, quality-improvement objectives, environmental, safety and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician II position which may include:
  • Entering orders into computerized patient profile for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintaining patient demographic and medication profiles in computer systems.
  • Providing non-clinical drug information, such as available dosage forms and strengths, costs, package sizes to patients, nurses and physicians.
  • Keeping files, records and communication organized.
  • Answering telephone calls within three (3) rings.
  • Repackaging, labeling, handling and storing pharmaceuticals.
  • Measuring and mixing to compound and reconstitute medication.
  • Packaging medication orders for delivery.
  • Using and maintaining equipment and facilities.
  • Ordering drugs from wholesaler and receiving drugs into pharmacy stock. Maintaining Schedule II drug usage log and inventory count.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all aspects of pharmacy services identified below:
  • Medical terminology and abbreviation common to prescribing and dispensing.
  • Drug names and classification.
  • Medication order and prescription interpretation.
  • Basic pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Federal and State laws governing the practice of pharmacy and the distribution of controlled and non-controlled substances.
  • Medication error prevention methods.
  • Aseptic technique and preparation procedures for sterile dosage forms.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain input of a minimum of 80% of the average number of prescriptions per hour demonstrated by the Lead Technician. (Manager of Pharmacy Operations if Lead Technician has less than one (1) year Community Hospice experience) with no error. Such prescriptions will include a mixture of new and refill prescriptions, facility and homecare prescriptions and include template items such as Intravenous, subcutaneous and other compounded items.
  • Performs aseptic compounding of sterile parenteral admixtures. This includes the practice of aseptic technique, proper procedures for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures, preparation of the label and any control records, the proper technique for visual inspection of Parenteral solutions and the documentation of quality control.
  • Triages orders, determines priorities and processes orders appropriately.
  • Notifies the pharmacist and management of any unusual situations, occurrences, conditions or complaints as related to drugs, drug requests, drug usage or security as appropriate.
  • Facilitates the safe and efficient transport of medications, drug-delivery devices and supplies from the pharmacy to inpatient facilities and patients.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently with regard to the functions and tasks for the operation of the pharmacy.
  • Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees.
  • Interacts effectively with other members of the health care team on a regular basis.
  • Operates technology (computers, EyeCon, Smart Cabinet) in accordance with policy, procedures and manufacturing instructions.
  • Performs the essential functions related to opening and closing the pharmacy.
  • Uses appropriate telephone communication skills, and effectively communicates with patients, nurses, physicians and other co-workers.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Florida Department of Health.

Education/Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required skills and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • All pharmacy technicians must possess abilities and a thorough knowledge base, understanding, and level of proficiency to assure adherence to the procedures and objectives of pharmacy service. These abilities and knowledge include general basic chemistry, arithmetic, reading, and writing.
  • Graduate from an approved pharmacy technician training program.
  • Possess a high school diploma or certificate of equivalency.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in the practice of retail and/or institutional pharmacy.
  • Successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician I probationary period.
