Position Summary:

The Constant Observer (CO) is an entry level position that provides direct patient observation in an inpatient setting in order to assure the safety and well-being of the patient under the supervision of the RN. The constant observer is responsible to assist in the plan of care for specific patients related to patient safety and functions to continuously observe patients who are at risk for any type of harm. This includes self-harm, injury to others, over-stimulation from the environment, fall risk, impulsivity, elopement or other harmful behaviors. The constant observer will utilize techniques to identify, prevent, and manage events of violent or unsafe behavior demonstrated by the patient and always maintain a continuous safe environment for the patient. The constant observer is an integral part of the health care team and works closely with the nursing care team to ensure the patient’s safety.

Education:

High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma

Licensure/Certification:

Nursing Assistant Certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing required.
Current CPR certification required.

Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to respond quickly to aggressive patient behaviors and have the ability to learn and implement high risk patient safety skills.
Possess clear, effective verbal and written communication, documentation and accountability measures consistent with hospital/departmental standards
