LVN- Pediatrics – Shasta Community Health Center – Redding, CA

JOB SUMMARY

The primary function of the LVN is to provide direct and indirect support to the clinician in the delivery of patient care. The LVN prepares the exam room, chart, and patient to be seen by the practitioner and performs/implements orders for diagnostic tests. Accurately administers medications, including immunizations, by all routes except IV. S/he routinely arranges outside referral appointments and provides patient education under the direction of the clinician when appropriate. The LVN acts as the lead nurse on the clinical team when co-assigned with a Medical Assistant.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilizes elements of the nursing process in data collection and documentation for assessment purposes.
  • Contributes and assists in the implementation of the plan of care and in providing information to the clinician or RN for evaluation purposes.
  • Initiates venipuncture with clinician’s order for the purpose of IV fluid administration (IV Certified LVN only).
  • Performs urinary bladder catheterization with clinician’s order.
  • Counts and signs for controlled substances according to clinic policy.
  • Prepares the exam room and work station for clinician; cleans and stocks rooms in between patients.
  • Prepares the patient and assists the clinician with exams and procedures when needed.
  • Administers injections and diagnostic test/referrals as ordered, including immunizations, completing lab and x-ray requisitions and other services ordered by the clinician.
  • Documents all immunizations according to standards.
  • Performs diagnostic and laboratory tests including but not limited to audiometry, EKG, spirometry, urine dips, acu-check, urine HCG, hemocue hemoglobin, etc. according to SCHC competency standards and protocols.
  • Performs age appropriate screening as needed or as directed by clinician.
  • Initiates appropriate emergency measures as needed.
  • Assures all diagnostics and referrals have been completed.
  • Assures all documents for scanning have patient identification.
  • Performs end of shift tasks for room closure, or equipment and logs off EHR.
  • Assures efficient patient flow by ongoing assessment of clinician schedule, and working with other staff to minimize patient waiting time.
  • Works cooperatively to ensure that the clinician sees patients as quickly as possible.
  • Schedules patients appropriately.
  • Alerts Supervisor to needed supplies/equipment.
  • Reports any safety hazards.
  • Functions as Team leader when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of standard nursing care and procedures.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and universal precautions.
  • Basic Computer proficiency in Windows environment.
  • Typing 35 WPM.
  • Ability to read, write, understand and spell English and medical terminology correctly.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of an accredited LVN program.
  • Current California LVN license upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification upon hire and maintain current.

PREFERRED

  • Previous experience working in an outpatient clinic or doctor’s office.
  • IV Certification.
  • Typing 45 WPM or greater.
