Laboratory Tech – ORAU – Bethesda, MD

Overview:

ORAU has a job opportunity for a Laboratory Technician . This position will support of the overall functions of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), NIH. The position is contingent on award of an upcoming contract with SOARS, Scientific, Operations,and Administrative Resources, NIH. Salary for positions will be determined based on education and experience. Relocation support is not available for this position.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive, process and track samples from the NIH Undiagnosed Disease Program (UDP); use UDPICS and
    FreezerPro.
  • Ensure proper specimen collection including handling, labeling, processing, transportation, electronic archiving, and
    storage of specimens.
  • Perform DNA, RNA, RBC and buffy coat extraction and quantification.
  • Perform genotyping using multiple platforms, gene expression constructs.
  • Archive serum, plasma, CSF and urine cell pellets.
  • Perform collection, barcoding and transportation of research samples (skin biopsies, research blood, cerebral spinal
    fluid and urine) to Building 50 lab.
  • Pick up muscle biopsy, CSF, blood, and skin biopsy samples from sites of sedated procedures and deliver to
    Department of Laboratory Medicine or Bldg. 50 lab.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Biology, or CAP Certified Clinical Laboratory – Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) – 4 years of experience is
    equal to a Bachelor’s Degree
  • experience in a CLIA or CAP certified clinical laboratory
  • Implement quality control procedures of the laboratory
  • Performing preventive maintenance,troubleshooting and calibration procedures;
  • Working knowledge of reagent stability and storage
  • Proper instrument use
  • Ability to evaluate and verify patient sample quality, through
    established quality control procedures
  • Knowledge, awareness and skills required to assess, evaluate and verify patient sample quality, through established quality control procedures
  • Implementing and performing standard laboratory procedures for DNA and RNA extractions
  • Demonstrated background knowledge, experience and proficiency in skills required for proper specimen
    collection, including handling, labeling, processing, transportation, electronic archiving, and storage of specimen
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
