The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Registered Nurse functions within the limits of the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, St. Luke’s Hospital and Patient Care Services policies and practice guidelines and performs in a comparable manner to peers with similar training, experience and circumstances.

Principle Accountabilities:

1. Provides patient care using the nursing process before, during and after procedures performed in the CCL/Special Angiogram Lab, to include providing hemostasis post procedure if necessary.

2. Assesses patient’s condition during a procedure using patient’s signs and symptoms, immediately recognizing potentially dangerous and life-threatening conditions, and intervening appropriately.

3. Provides quality patient care from admission to discharge by collaborating with all healthcare team members and other departments and maintaining cost-effectiveness in accordance with established policies and practice guidelines.

4. Demonstrates competencies of the Missouri Nurse Practice Act by practicing within established policies and practice guidelines.

5. Demonstrates unit-defined competencies as required.

6. Acts as resource person for patients, visitors, and staff in both routine and crisis situations. Addresses problems and complaints thoroughly and responds appropriately and promptly.

7. Practices aseptic technique and is able to prepare and assist the physician with all procedures done in the department.

8. Interprets EKG rhythms and hemodynamic wave forms and records appropriately, alerting the physician when necessary. Electrically calibrates and operates the hemodynamic recorder. Is able to set up and zero the transducers, cables and manifold system in conjunction with the hemodynamic recorder.

9. Administers Moderate Sedation per hospital policy. Maintains medications, crash cart, and IV supplies through proper charging and routine checks.

10. Safely and efficiently prepares, operates, and helps to maintain specialized equipment found in the department.

11. Operates x-ray table during both special angiograms and cardiac catheterizations, including rotating the tube and positioning the “wedge”, enabling the nurse to “pan” for the physician.

12. Operates the x-ray console, selecting proper tube and radiologic selectors for patient size and view during all procedures.

13. Assists the x-ray specialist in positioning patients during special angiograms.

14. Loads outside media and copies media for transfer to another institution, logging appropriately in the CD logbook.

15. Participates in patient and family teaching pre, during and post procedure as needed according to department protocol.

16. Documents accurately, thoroughly, and completely including but not limited to procedure notes with notation in all fields as appropriate. Assures comprehensive documentation and utilization of charge sheets, pre and post procedure summary sheets, and teaching forms.

17. Acts as resource person to the hospital personnel concerning procedures performed and patient care required before and after procedures performed in the department.

18. Assumes accountability for professional growth by functioning as a resource to other healthcare professionals and maintaining a current professional knowledge base.

19. Participates in unit-based quality improvement processes as required.

20. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

Nursing degree required, i.e., Nursing Diploma, Associates Degree, or bachelor’s degree.

License – Certification – Registration (Text Only): Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri Required. BLS and ACLS are required. Experience:

Recent critical care experience required.

Evaluative skills necessary for patient assessment.

Decision making skills required for treatment planning/implementation.

Clinical reasoning and judgment skills necessary for evaluation of nursing interventions and for safety of patients and self.

Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact with patients, visitors, and staff.

Ability to recognize a need for and alter communication with patients with communication impairments.

Ability to manage time, organize daily schedule to meet productivity standards, and cope with professional stress.

Reporting Relationships (Text Only): Job Relationships: Member of a comprehensive healthcare team, including other healthcare providers, the patient, the patient’s family and significant others. Takes direction from: Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse Manager, charge nurse and Cardiologists. Supervised by: Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse Manager. Working Conditions:

Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.

Ability to lift heavy objects using proper lifting techniques and with assistance as necessary.

Ability to transfer and move patients who vary with ability to assist weighing 200+ lbs. using proper lifting techniques and with assistance as necessary.

Ability to push and pull equipment weighing in excess of 40 lbs. using proper techniques and with assistance as necessary.

Manual dexterity, coordination and skillful use of hands when working with patient and equipment which may include pushing buttons, adjusting dials, turning on/off switches, buckling, holding and positioning limbs/body parts, etc.

Ability to physically perform necessary documentation in writing.
